Photo Essay: What the world eats

wow that is pretty awesome. crazy at how some people can spend so little on food and others can spend so much.

Humm, the Chinese and US ones are strikingly similar.

I noticed that the smiles seemed more genuine in the photos where people had less. Like Ecuador.

I think it was interesting how much overlap there was in the cost/volume of food. Even the three in the US pretty much showed that you could eat pretty good for alot less than you are likely paying. (compare the $150 family with the $340 one). That one family had a pretty good spread for about $5 worth.

I really wish I lived somewhere that you could run to an outdoor market for fruits/veggies/meat etc. Everything that makes it up here (northern Canada) is decidedly not fresh 🙁

I actually think the Mongolian one looked like a great spread. But I think the Mexican one looked like it was the best balenced.

and the mexican family looked the most obese.😕

thats a whole lot of money to spend in just 1 week for food..... at least for the mostly developed countries... 1.30 for a week is crazy tho for a family... it'd be nice to be able to buy that much food for that cheap here in the US... we're so privileged tho.

Look at the percentage of processed food for the US family compared to the others. thats crazy

Really interesting. I was actually surprised by quantity. You hear about how much the Americans eat, granted, i expect them to eat a lot more than most countries, but several were right up there in terms of quantity. As someone mentioned, there was just a big difference in how much was actually processed.

I think they just need to cut out that coke and beer. 12 bottles of coke and ~30 beers is entirely too much.

I think the egyptian one was also really good, except it tries to feed too many people.

Great photo essay. The photo of the African American family totally highlights the reasons why hypertension is such a problem in those communities. The family's entire diet consisted of meat, fast foods, and junk food. No fiber, no vegetables, and little in the way of fresh fruit. That's just a heart attack waiting to happen.

Something not quite right, I'd guess people eat a lot more meat.

To me it looked like the Chinese family was trying hard to show off. Lots more meat than I would have expected in that diet.

Yeah, except for all the coke bottles in the back.

I loved the family from Tingo where everyone was wearing a fedora. 😀
