Since I don't use my landline phone often I find no reason to spend $$ to replace it. I am actually looking for a software solution that will alert me when a call comes in and have caller ID and voice mail capability.

Not looking to do VoIP, just a software I can run from my laptop to replace the phone.

Any idea?

There used to be alot of software that came with analog modems over the years that would act like an answering machine etc.

I googled and found several hits but most of them were pay for software

If you don't use your landline that often get rid of it and buy a USB corded handset for your laptop that will work with Skype. Best of both worlds.

I remember receiving some kind of phone software with my pacard bell in 1994. It worked, too - I called my dad from the computer and he thought it was pretty cool.
