Phone recommendation..

Its finally time to upgrade my phone. I want it to have some sort of organizer (so i dont have to carry it and my Palm). I would REALLY like it if the phone had wifi, but if its not possible i'll get over it. Price is not a big deal...

The only other thing thats going to make it hard: no data plan. I cannot get a data plan.. Parents wont pay for it.. parents wont let me pay for it. So im SOL there. Anything good?

Thats what i was afraid of.. It makes me mad that they decided to REQUIRE data plans on all the new (better) phones. Oh well, might be stuck without a PDA even now 🙁

I was sort of in the same boat. I decided not to get any of the new smart phones because of Verizon's asshole policy of requiring their lame data plan. I just got the Env2 and so far, I really like the phone.

I would honestly pay for an unlimited data plan no problem. It pisses me off that they require it now, but it also sucks that my parents wont let me get it.

Supposedly the reason for requiring it is because the new smartphones no longer send txt/pix messages the same was as other phones. The new phones send/recieve them as "data" thus requiring the data plan.. Dunno if that makes sense

Problem isn't Verizon's policies, it's the fact that OP's parents won't let him purchase the plan himself, when he's obviously willing. OP how old are you?

Problem is actually part Verizon's policies.. because i can get similar phones on other carries without a data plan.

Im 17.. probably not worth it for me to drop off my parents family plan just yet.

I had the Env2 and I loved it.
But upgraded to a Voyager (within the first 30 days) and love that even better.

If that is the case, then they should give free unlimited texts if you have the unlimited data plan.

Check out the LG Dare. I'm 99% sure it doesn't require a data plan (or ANYTHING that requires a monthly charge on top of the minutes you have to pay for)

It doesn't. My wife has one. We just pay for a $5 text plan.

according to the verizon sales rep, it does require a data plan as almost everything you do on the phone sends/receives data. could be just a lame sales pitch though.

Ask if texting or making phone calls requires data usage. I know you said you'd prefer Wifi (I'm assuming to get on the internet) but if you're willing to not go online and Verizon doesn't let you get the Dare without a data plan, just go to a web retailer and get the phone from them. Some of them don't require a data plan for the Dare.

While you're at it, you can check web retailers for other phones that don't require a data plan but anything that is blackberry or technically a smartphone will have a data plan (Dare isn't techincally a smartphone)

Here is the problem.. I can get all kinds of phones online that dont "need" a data plan, but Verizon refuses to activate without a data plan. As for the Dare, is it any good for use as a basic PDA/organizer?

**The fight continues**
I found out at work (Retail store) that we get 17% discount from Verizon.. even for just a basic, entry level sales job like me. The Verizon rep informed me that it would be applied to my ENTIRE family plan.. thus saving 20-30$. My parents seem to like the idea that TOTAL-30+30=total. So they/I wont be paying anything extra really.

If the data plan is really becoming an option, I'll throw in a quick word for the Samsung Saga (SCH-i770). Got it a week ago... Couldn't live without the big optical mouse (touch pad thing). Battery life is the only letdown.

Battery life isnt important to me i guess.. My current phone (POS flip phone) dies after being on for 8 hours. Or if i actually call somebody it shuts off after 5 minutes.

it does not apply for the entire family plan, only the first line. meaning it wont cover the additional cost per line fee.

It covers the full family account just not 17% off of each line cost. So for example if he is on a single family plan for $400 a month minus lets say 4 phones that would be $360. Minus 17% it would be around $310, + 4$0 for the lines $350 instead of $400.

As for a Smart phone. I like My Black Berry Storm. It doesn't have wifi but I really enjoy its features and being touch as opposed to, touch with a pen because everything is so small, or no touch but a scroll bar or digital cursor, I can actually use it quickly. I also enjoy the click screen as it seriously reduces the chances of a miss press or miss type.

It isn't a toy in the sense that the Iphone is so navigation isn't dumbed down (not that it would be a bad thing) and it isn't always the best at everything it does. Its a great phone but if little annoying things bug you and make you wonder why you ever purchased product A.) then it isn't for you. If you want to get an extremely useful and only true touch smart phone on Verizon's system and are open to working around the phone instead of expecting the phone to work around you then the Storm is for you.

So lemme get this straight. The 17% off will apply to the main charge. Correct? So we have a "Nationwide Basic Family SharePlan" with 1400 minutes.. It costs 89.99 with 2 phones (thats the least) but 109.99$ with 4 Phones (we have). I will be saving my 17% off just the 89.99? Or will it be off the total?

89.99. They aren't going to cover the $10 per additional phone.

Edit:

Note that this is if the other guy is right. This may also be a full plan discount. But if they are not going to cover the other lines it isn't going to be based on Full bill divided by phones. Its just not going to get you a discount on the actual extra line costs.

So its not 27.49 - 17% its 89.99 - 17% if the guy above is right but you need to confirm this.

That sucks.. but oh well. Saving money is still saving money. I'll take it. Now i just gotta wait a while to actually get a phone 🙁

Looks like the replacement might be coming sooner than i expected.. The phone gave me a "critical error" tonight when sending a Text. This is not unusual for me.. happens like 1-2x per week. Tonight however, it wont turn on after. Plugged in, no lights.. nothin. I assume its completely dead.

Gratz man welcome to the blackberry club. My guess is a year with that and you will never want to use anything else.
