Is there such a thing.... Man I miss playing games online... Since we moved into this new house I cant play for crap... getting anywhere from a whopping 19200 to a blazing 33333 in the middle of the night. Phone company says they've done all they can Its just the lines.... It was worse. No cable so i have a dish.... no DSL to far from CO.... so whats a guy to do other than move? Is there any way to get a better connection ? Also I play UT, and when it does a search it;ll find some playable servers 250-300 ms but when I actually log into them its like a 4000 ping sometimes .....WTF is that?Anyway thanks for reading this far ... I need to go to bed ,to sleep ,to dream... Of fragging the crap outa someone cause it seems like thats the only way I can do it is to dream.

Oh by the way I am using a creative modem blaster v.90, before that another 56k Bestdata I think, and I tried a nother that a buddy had... all the same .i've tried 4 -6 different Isps as well.

Your phone lines just suck. Your out of luck and nothing you really can do unless the phone comany replaces the wiring completely, or installa co near you

Kavrok, a phone line amp won't do you any good. The signal should arrive at your house at -16 relative to the transmit. A good modem can auto adjust to a signal at -24 or even less. 'Hot' signals cause modems to have fits, you'll ony amplify the noise.

Thanks Daddy g........can u lend me some knowledge in this area? The techs at my Isp had me turn off error control then try to sign on...(temp) and view login attempt ,all kinds of crap came across screen they said that was noise... told phone company they said well its showing clear from our end... Duh!! I hate to keep buying modems just to have them do the same way. But If I knew a modem choice would make a difference I would definetly buy it. So advise me O golden one.:D:disgust:

The telephone company responsibility is to give you a clear voice signal. They're not responsible for your data signal. So when you call in just bitch about getting static every once in a while, but do not mention anything about sh#tty data signals and they'll send a guy out to fix it. Now the they get your shot gun out or find a really fine nekkid chicks to answer the door. That might get him to work harder and run a new line from the pole to your house or something.

Paldo is pretty much correct when he says that 'clear voice' is all the Phone Co is responsible for. If the service guy comes out and finds nothing, you'll get billed (most likely). Some Phone Cos offer special line conditioning (at a charge) which basically means the install tech checks out different line pairs to find the one with the least noise. Sometimes they can install Echo Cancellation but most modems have this already. He can check that the receive level is -16db and maybe make adjustments at the local POP. You might try to find out the type of modem your ISP uses, modems of the same brand often do the dance better. I've been around sice dirt (when modems connected at 300 baud) so I'm amazed at 56k on regular Voice lines.

Not quite your problem, but when I got DSL installed, the guy put special "filters" on the line to make sure the DSL signal was unimpeded. I don't know if they were necessary, but they sure reduced the line quality for ordinary voice and data communications. On some of my phones, there's an audible hiss, and when the PC in the next room connects to a free Internet provider, the best I can do is about 32000 or 40000 as opposed to 49333 previously.

I figure if these filters can cause so much mayhem on the line, there must be some kind of device that works in reverse.

A few things to try

Do you have any other phones or answering machines hooked up to the line? They could be adding interference to it, unhook them and see what happens. Try dialing a single number in you house and listen for line noise (you will have about 30 seconds before the off hook signal starts). Do you hear humming or chatter, or even other people talking(bleed through happened on my line once). Take a phone to the junction box outside your house and repeat the test. Is there a difference in sound? If so then it is your inside wiring.

What tweaks have you tried? When playing online games limit your connect speed to 19200 and see what happens. There are more you can find on the net to try.

Thanks lordtrouble... I have a seperate dedicated line... And thats where my gripe with the phone company began.... all new lines from the network box outside to PC. no audible noise. I,ve been fighting with them for a year on this now... I went so far as to file a complaint with the State Corporation Commission...And thats then "Verizon " finally decided that they should at least look into it.... Well It is better than it was but it still sucks... I went over to a friends house who lives farther out in the Boonies than I do and he's connecting @49333. And His CO and Mine Are tHE SAME. Oh Back to the gripe with the Phone company... Where is it written where the average user can find it That they only guarantee voice quality? In our local Phone book we have a big pullout section about connecting to the Internet... and how you should have at least a 28.8 modem.... to me that says they are offering at least 28800 connection..
Anyway ......... And why when i do get into a net game does my ping change from like 270 to a 4398 in a matter of minutes?

Deja vu. I've been through a similar situation of getting the phone company to check my phone lines for noise. Everything these people are telling you to check, that the phone company will guarantee, etc. are exactly what I experienced, although my connection on a dedicated line wasn't that noisy (I wanted to get faster connection speeds of course :)), but it did conk out a few times due to workers messing with the wires, or if moisture got on the wires in the telephone box on the pole.

But this occured between 2-5 years ago. I have since gone to college and gotten cable modem at home :)

Maybe the new Hughes DirectDuo service is available in your area. It is a 2-way satellite high-speed internet service. It's probably worse than cable and dsl in terms of ping times but it should beat the hell outta a modem.

Do a search on "directduo" and you should find some threads on it.

Have you tried your modem at your friends house, or tried his at yours? Just want to make sure that it is the phone line itself and not the modem or setup. I assume that you have the latest drivers for it?

A few more things to do,

Line test
The above will take you to the 3com page explaining how to use there line test to check if you can use 56K. Some people like it, others don't. Won't hurt to try.

What does your ISP use? X2, Kflex? It helps if you have the same as them. If you have to, use an Int string to change your modem to V90. Most ISP's that run 56k will support this.

Another site that may help 56K troubleshooting. They helped me out when I still had my old dial-up modem. I finally found out that even though I was closer to the CO, I was routed to a box so that I was almost twice as far away as I thought I was.

Oh, about the DirectDuo,

The current DirectPC has a Fair Access Policy. If they feel that you are using too much of the bandwidth, they will hit you with the FAP and slow you done. I have heard of people saying it was worse than a 2.2K a sec download. I am doubtful that the new 2 way system would be much better.
