Hi, my parents recently came back from a trip from Hong Kong, and purchased a Kenwood cordless phones with three extra stations. What do I need to get this thing to work? It gets a dial tone, but it won't dial. I'll punch in the number I want to call, but the phone keeps on giving me a dial tone. Everything is in Japanese, so I don't understand the instructions. Do I need something special? Thanks in advance everyone!

It may be that the Japanese phone system is different from the US phone system since they use different switching stations, and perhaps different frequencies. That's the reason some modems have adjustable country codes for different countries and phone systems.

edit: After a bit of searching, it seems like both countries use the same set of frequencies to dial (DTMF -- is it a standard?), but I can't find anything in terms of system compatbility.

edit2: best thing I've found to "support" the incompatibility: here

it means that those stores' owners bought the product directly from the retail store in japan; and, brought it back to hongkong and sell it in hongkong.

those product is selling without warrenty which the hongkong's subcompany or distributer won't cover any of those product.

the water goods is directly translate from cantonese without any meaning in english.

and, at last, the phone system in north america and hongkong is not the same but compitable, but not for the japan one

(i know it makes no sense but listen, all three place have different phone system which hk is followed to uk, us&canada has their own as well as the japan using their own.

at the end, the phone in japan compatiable to hk but not to us&canada;
the phone in hk can compatiable to japan and us&canada;
and the us&canada can compatiable to hk but not japan
