phone echo

Is there something I can do to eliminate an echo when my phone is on speakerphone ? Is it just because it's a cheap(er) phone ? Usually it goes away after a few seconds of speaking, but this time it is not. Something wrong the phone itself ? The line ?

See if you can turn down the volume on the speaker? That's what causes echo...when you get feedback from the speaker into the mic.

Helps to know which phone you're talking about.

A cheap one apparently.
it cost $75... company budget, couldn't go with the latest/greatest... needed 2 lines on it with speakerphone... I can only make due...

So it's definitely the damned phone ? I just got DSL and I put the filter on the line (which they instruct us to do)... now the echo won't stop, but only on line 1 (line 2 also has the filter).

If you turn down the receiver it will be softer, but won't echo. It happens with recorders the same way too, just turn down the receiving volume.
