Phone cord question

I just noticed that my modem has 4 wire contacts for the phone cord, but the cord only has two contacts. Does this affect performance???

Only 2 wires are needed for phone connections...one for transmit and one for receive..

There are four wires so that a second phone line can be supported through one cable.
