I'm going to get this out of the way first: no, this is not going to be a modern, high-end, svelte phone, and it's probably going to have a bunch of issues (if I get it to work at all). But it seems like a fun project!
Finally - after about a month of waiting on parts, some coming from Thailand - I have almost all the parts I need for my Raspberry Pi phone. I call it "Project INAra" (It's Not Ara
). Here is where I got the idea. Most of the parts I'm using are the same, except I'm using an 800 x 600, 5" touchscreen... hopefully enough for Raspbian or whatever RPi distro I settle on.
I still need a few odd things like the carbon fiber vinyl I'll be using for the exterior (have the plastic already which I'll be molding for the case), some copper or aluminum to act as a heatsink if necessary (or a mini fan), and a new speaker since the surface transducer is bigger than I thought it would be. But I figure I'll try getting everything else working before I finish up on the case and other extra parts, or before I consider getting a NoIR camera module for infrared.
I'll update this post with more pics and details as things come along. I figure doing so will keep me motivated to finish the project.
Parts:
Crude render (I'm not an artist or experienced in graphic design) of what I want body to look like. My initials in a logo will go in circular area, originally where the transducer was going to go:
Front (ignore the green, was an earlier color choice that I'm too lazy to fix):
Original plan (haven't updated it with changes to specs). Bow before my MS Paint skills!
Should have just used GIMP/Photoshop with layers...
