Phillips DVP5982 no digital audio over HDMI

I finally got a modern HDMI equipped a/v receiver.
Hook up my dvd player, throw in a RONIN to test out DOlby Digital for first time.

Then realize im only getting PCM audio to receiver, grrrrrrr....
play around with setttings to no avail... to lazy to google solution, so i hookedup digital coax
cable, and got dolby digital....

fast forward to today, went to Phillips support site.
They say DIGITAL AUDIO is disabled with HDMI AUDIO enabled! AHHHHHH!!!

Are all dvd players like this, if so why do cable packages show the order of best connections:
RCA --> Optical --> Digital Coax --> HDMI if no player transmits digital audio thru HDMI...

I am not entirely sure you have this set up correctly. Please provide us with your settings you have tried in conjunction with one another and what receiver you have.

Just because it says it disables digital audio does not mean that compressed surround sound formats are disabled. It's likely saying the digital coax out won't work when the HDMI audio out is set to On.

Why is it a big deal in the first place anyway really...Either way you are getting the same sound...

This sounds correct.

I have the 5982 but only hooked up to a tv in a bedroom so no "surround sound system". There is an extensive thread on this player at AVS forums. But if you're too lazy to google then...

Sorry, apparently you need to enable "All" under "Digital Audio" BEFORE enabling "HDMI AUDIO"

I was disabling DIGITAL COAX before enabling HDMI AUDIO, wierd setup but it worked.

The 5982 is somewhat abnormal. To make matters worse there is a firmware bug that causes HDMI audio to come back on when the player is rebooted. Serious PITA. It's a pretty capable little player for $60 but I can't say I miss mine.

1 Introduction
The upgrade version of this software is Version 37.07.32.43 This software can be used to upgrade the following Philips DVD Players:
? DVP5982/37
? DVP5982C1/37
After you have completed the upgrade procedure, your DVD player will typically perform better. What improvements are made depends on the upgrade software you are using as well as the software that your DVD player contained before the upgrade.
2 Key Features
This software version includes:
? HDMI to DVI TV: resolve set losing resolution setting upon standby.
? Set HDMI Audio setting default to ON
? Improve HDMI Compatibility

My player has an older firmware but that still sets HDMI audio on automatically when HDMI cable is connected.
Software Version History: Version 37.07.32.40
? Improvement on HDMI audio setting automatically set to "ON" when a HDMI cable is plugged in.
Version 37.07.32.31
? Fix on TV display 16:9 & HDMI video setup issue
? Fix on Sleep timing accuracy

So every time I turn on the DVD player, I have to go into the setup menu, disable HDMI audio, and enable Digital Audio to "ALL"

Huge PITA but it's my only gripe with the otherwise perfect DVD player

edit: my receiver (Onkyo HT-S5100) doesnt decode HDMI Audio, so I have DVD player connected straight to TV (Samsung LN46A650) via HDMI and have DVD player connected to receiver via Digital Coax cable
