Philips Sonicare vs Braun/Oral-B?

Which model of electric toothbrush is best?

If you have used both - which is your preferred based on overall feel, comfort, and noise level?

The Sonicare kind I guess is just a vibration style, while the Braun Oral-B models usually have physically moving parts to the head - back and forth and circular rotation and whatnot.

I'm looking mostly at the models that are right about $50-60.
 
Dunno if this still holds true, but I tried both models ~8 years ago and I found the Sonicare to have far superior "cleaning action." The high frequency vibration vs. the relatively slower oscillation of the Oral-B seemed to result in a better clean. Also more likely to be recommended by dentists, FWIW, at least back then. One advantage for the Oral-B is the rounded brush heads which in my experience were better. In the end I prefer the Sonicare and still use one today.

I repped our state Dental Association as a contract lobbyist during the last legislative session and the dentists almost unanimously preferred the Sonicare. I have a good enough relationship with them that I trust they were not just giving me a paid endorsement.

I was liking this one (Philips Sonicare 3 series Gum Health) or this one (Philips Sonicare 5 series Healthy White)... I don't care for extra bells and whistles, but it seems to be the case that the 5-series model has a better build, and I think I'd like extra button to help vary the speed so I don't have to cycle through button presses every time.

Only bummer is that it appears Sonicare replacement heads are generally more expensive than the Oral-B heads. But, then again, I've never had terrific oral hygiene, and I'm trying to correct that, so less scolding at the dentist will be worth it.


FWIW: right now I'm using a Spinbrush, perhaps it was $15 or so? Not bad at all, better than manual by far, but I'd like to get something that is actually build to last and might just have better cleaning ability. There does appear to be some science behind the "sonic" vibration approach, as that motion has a secondary effect that helps, through fluid dynamics, clean out areas just a tad out of reach of the actual bristles. Tiny little improvements, when it comes to brushing, go a long way.
 
Been using Sonic care the last 10 years. The Oral-B's seem like toys to me but maybe I've been brain washed.
 
i went through 4 Oral-Bs (including one of the very top-of-the-line models) before getting a sonicare

in my experience the Oral-Bs battery either dies rather quickly or it doesn't handle a weak battery very well

on the other hand my sonicare (cheapest model) has lasted as long as all my Oral-Bs combined and is still going strong

that plus it does a better job. after a month of using it, plaque that had built up while using the oral-b just broke apart and flaked off my tooth and even my hygienist has commented that i'm doing a better job keeping my teeth clean

that may be true if you brush properly and thoroughly

i never had the patience for that, so the electrics are much more effective than my lazy-ass brushing

the amount of plaque buildup i would get between dental visits is night and day

in fact i was on a 4-month schedule for a bit because it would get so bad. now i'm back to 6-month and i still come in better than i did at 4-months using the manual

I've had both and my personal preference is Oral-B. I just like it more since the spinning heads+sonic gives me better feel and angle especially the back side tooth. I don't think you can go wrong with either though. I've also added a Waterpik flosser unit to my stash of dental tools. I'm surprised it was able to flush out more "stuffs" even after my normal floss and mecha-brush routine.
The way I figure it, you pay up front for dental hygiene investment at home or you'll pay the dentist later (plus pain). I have this thing against paying to get pain inflicted on me. My last checkup visit was great...the hygienist gave it a thumbs up with barely any signs of plaque.

I went from a manual brush to a Philips Diamondcare one. The difference was instantly noticeable. Yeah the Philip's cost me $189, yeah the replacement heads cost as much as 4 good normal tooth brushes. I would say my Philip's is clearly superior to the previous electric brush I had, which was clearly better than a manual one.

I love my soniccare, and it's a time saver - I can put my shoes on, etc., while brushing my teeth with my other hand.
 
Sonicare. Anything else and you're just a C student when it comes to your dental care. Do you really want to be the Dubya of dental health?

lol seriously? Is any other toothbrush different when it comes to that? You use to have a two-handed toothbrush or something? 😀
 
When going in for a cleaning, it used to entail a lot of scraping and rinsing. The hygienist recommended a Sonicare and now there is virtually no scraping at all. Usually only between my two front teeth on my lower jaw. I also get a lot of compliments on how I take care of my teeth.

Never used an Oral-B, but I've been using the Sonicare for easily over ten years.
 
I have and like my Sonicare, but I'm sure Braun is just fine. While my dentist has Sonicare in his office, he told me the big deal with any electric toothbrush is that the timers help people actually spend enough time properly brushing their teeth (2-3 minutes).

Studies notwithstanding:

I got an electric toothbrush and noticed it cleans much better. My teeth feel smooth and nice and I like it.
Works even better with Arm & Hammer toothpaste.
