My girlfriend actually got this deal after looking for the player all over town.

The Good Guys (Blossom Hill, San Jose, CA) had 8 of the Philips DVP 642 in back with no display models out, she had to ask specifically for it. It rang up at $69.99 and the guy handed her a $20 rebate from Good Guys that he said was good on any DVD player purchase made until August 21. It was some Summer Blockbuster promotion.

J~

(LOL edited title for nitpicker, even though it was spelled right in text ;-) and added location that had them in stock as of today) I haven't seen any subtitle problems so far, but will keep checking various DVD's.

is it better than an APEX? That is definitely a Miracle DVD player for about the same or cheaper price

Actually, these DVD players were most likely made by Apex, as if you look at the firmware code, you'll see alot of Apex code from their other players. Without even looking at the code, you can see the menus and screensaver are exactly the same as that of Apex players of the past.

FYI, it's "Philips", one "l".

If you go to videohelp.com's DVD player compatibility page and search for "Phillips" it clearly says, "Philips is spelled PHILIPS, not PHILLIPS! :)".

Anyway, the aforementioned DVD Player compatibility list's page for the Philips 642 says it has some issues, particularly with subtitles and PAL-resolution conversions. (it crops PAL images. EDIT: except it doesn't unless you tell it to) Knowing Philips I'm sure the next iteration of this player -- be it new model or firmware/bios revision -- will fix these problems. Until then I think I might wait... though with the price this low I might not be able to. Even with the PAL-cropping issue (EDIT: the one that doesn't exist, see below) the (relatively) all-format compatibility is worth $50 most likely. A $5 or $10 price drop and I'd be there without thinking.

Cliffnotes:
"Philips is spelled PHILIPS, not PHILLIPS! :)" OP, fix your title accordingly.
Aside from minor subtitle problems and no apparant 3ivx support, this thing rocks!

EDIT: According to a comment by mapanari in the compatibility page the PAL-cropping issue can be fixed by turning off the "Pan and Scan" setting. The cliffnotes no longer say there's a PAL-cropping issue accordingly.

any idea of it plays OGM files?

i already bought this player and it's amazing...has played everything I've thrown at it...I'm just wondering about OGM playback because I don't want to bother wasting a disc (don't have any OGM files burned yet) :D

I bought this to replace my Apex 2600 which had problems with one too many pre-recorded DVDs - so far I've had no problems with the Philips playing anything.

Hey, I did exactly the same thing, replaced my Apex 2600 that was choking on pre-recorded DVDs and recorded DVD's. Also, it was starting to have problems with MP3's burned to DVD-R. The Phillips "Miracle" DVD player is great! I have DVD-R's with 5 or 6 DIVX AVI's on them and they play just fine. For the price, this is the one to GET!

I picked this up for my dad for fathers day a few months ago from walmart... It was 69.99 and I believe there was a rebate good at cc at the time at this same price(49.99 AR), but I didn't bother trying to get it since I was giving it away(and it was out of stock at every cc I went to). I'd feel funny if I gave my dad a box with the UPC cut out anyway...

He said he loves it, plays anything I gave him to try out on it. Even a few things that would just refuse to play on my liteon 2001... (I believe it was a VBR svcd, or just some weird bitrate)... Someday I'll replace the 1st gen loader in my xbox and just use that, as it does play anything you throw at it (xbmc rocks)...

I picked up one of these at Target when they were on sale and have to say it's a helluva player that hasn't refused anything I've thrown at it. I did the firmware upgrade, and after a hiccup with the settings not coming up for the right player after doing so, it has been running like a champ.

I've heard some complaints about it being a 'noisy' player, but unless you're running it with no sound, I don't see the reason for them.

I replaced an early high quality Toshiba that didn't have as many output options and this is pretty sweet.

question from me: will it play files with the .AVI suffix, or must they end in .DIVX ?

heh...didn't know files actually ended in .DIVX. ;) Your .avi files should play fine.

One thing to note: I updated my firmware to the lastest and it gets you Divx VOD, better MPEG4 support and external subtitle support. The thing is, it actually made one movie in particular have worse quality, and it didnt help the two xvid movies I was having trouble with. I'm looking for the original firmware to go back if I need to, but if you are thinking about updating you should probably wait a bit.

Awesome, I found some in stock...but I'm not sure if I can get there in time to pick one up. Good deal considering the $20 rebate. Thanks for the deal.
