Hi, i'm looking at some MP3-CD players and came upon the Philips eXpanium as the best bang for the buck (As it includes a car kit). Lowest i could find at this point is around $120 at BestBuy.

Have you had experiences with this or some other similar unit? (only MP3-CD units please). Care to share?

Thanks.

SonicBlue RioVolt SP250 is simply the best.

Radio, remote, 8 min shock protection, upgradable firmware, rechargable batteries...what more could you want?

Marty,

I'm looking for something that's less than $130 and includes a carkit as i'll be using this on and off the car. The 8 minute shock protection is good i guess but i doubt i'll really need that much, same goes for the radio and rechargeable batteries.

HOwever, that does look like a good unit. Will check it out in person.

Thanks.

i have the philips exp103. for walking around listening it's great, but the in-car performance isn't good & i'm planning on getting an in-dash mp3 cd-player. you'll probably want to get better headphones, too.

if you don't wanna go for the Riovolt 250 cause it's not in your budget, go for the Riovolt 100. You can get it for below $130. It's an excellent CD/MP3 player. I've had it since like February and it's awesome.

yeah man... go for a rio volt! Getting the 250 would the best thing to do... i'm sure its worth the extra $40. I have a rio volt 100 and I love it... I wanna get the 250 though. Hehe, I'll sell you mine for $100ish (its in great shape... just 3 or 4 months old)...

spamela, what's wrong with the in-car performance? I'd rather not get an aftermarket headunit at this time because if i change my headunit i'll be disabling the trip computer on the car 🙁

I doubt i'll be using the headphones however. Whether in the car or at home i'll just plug it in my Auxiliary port/Line-In

As for the RioVolt, y'all seem to have the same unit and a lot of other people seem to be raving about this unit. I have a question though, does it come with a car-power adapter so i can just plug it in the car?

Thanks for all the wonderful responses.

I have the expanium. I was one of the first people to get the expanium.I was first in line waiting to buy it. I love the device. But after year and some months I have seen a few flaws. One of them seems to be with the randomise pattern. Sometimes (rare)if it finds a bad trackin randomise mode it hangs until you skip to the next track then it would re-start. This doesnt happen in normal mode. The other bug I found is very rarely it will do a bad CRC and in the middle of the song it will stop and restart the song.. its weird. Those are the only two bugs that comes to mind. However the player is rock solid. I have had it fall out my seat and on to the ground and continue to play. It has seen quite a bit of abuse and it still works fine. Though now a days the "play" button needs to be pushed in a bit harder for it to register. That i will fix by opening it up.

Its a solid player, if you can live with the fact that it shows numbers instead of track names great. The sound quality is awesome and best of all its from a company that will be around much longer than diamond.

in my experience the in-car shock protection doesn't work well enough. this could be because of the way i drive or where i drive. i'd strongly suggest you try before you buy, or get an unconditional money-back guarantee from the seller in case the unit doesn't work acceptably in your car.

no it doesn't come with a car charger (not the 100 at least)

i have the Philips Expanium EXP103 and it's a good player for the price. Only problems i have with it is the lack of ID3 tag support and the fact that you cant fast forward or rewind through mp3's. Since it is a first-gen mp3/cd player, those were the tradeoffs. I bought it for $90 incl shipping from amazon.com. It was like $100 or something but I applied a $10 coupon towards it and there was free shipping on it.

i also have the expanium 103 and its pretty good but i think are better ones out there now. the sound quality is good but its a little weak in audio power, but overall its not too bad
