I just got back from a Tampa CompUSA and they have the Philips DVP642 dvd player in stock for $69.99. These are tough to find and don't stay in stock long. The Tampa store had two left on the shelf after I left. Happy hunting!!!

To play Divx or Xvid, do you just need to have the .avi file on the disc or is there a special way you have to write the disc?

No, just burn the file to the disc.

I've heard/researched that this player also plays mp3's on DVD's... as well as vcd/svcd's -- and is region-code hackable.

a DVD should hold about 500 mp3's -- can anyone who has this player confirm that it works with lots of mp3s ?

I can confirm that it plays xvid, divx, vcd, svcd, dvd-r, +r, -rw, +rw. I haven't tried mp3's yet. Region hacking couldn't be easier and you can upgrade the firmware on this player as well. The firmware and instructions are on Philips' website. All in all this player rocks.

I'd make a couple of DVD's but there's one problem:

This player does NOT have any random.

Otherwise it's awesome and plays just about everything.

I can confirm it'll read dvd mp3's, but as above no random option and to get through the list beyond 99 you have to scroll manually (at least it seems). I haven't done extensive testing, so, not sure how it'll work on VBR's, etc.

I  my Philips 642 player.

As other have mentioned, it will play just about anything, on pretty much every type of media. The fact that it doesn't have a MP3 shuffle mode sucks, but minor.

just an update from several online retailers:

Amazon.com - $69.99 shipped (ships within a week usually)
BestBuy.com - $79.99 shipped (in stock)
Target.com - $69.99 (arriving soon - order now)
JandR.com - $69.88 (in stock)
WalMart.com - $69.84 (out of stock)

We keep this list updated at GottaDeal. if you are willing to wait, Amazon is still the best bet, otherwise J&R might be the best deal now since even with shipping it should be cheaper than BestBuy.com.

So does anyone know if somehting simliar to this comes in a multidisk version??? Im trying to replace my Apex DVD changer that is on the fritz and Im interested in this, just don't know if I shold go with this or find something else... help!

Anything??? NO ogm or mkv 😀😛

Bought one of these...must have been defective if other people love them so much. Nonetheless, this DVD player didn't get the best technical reviews.

However, for those of you that are still interested, and can spare a trip to the local Wal-Mart, they probably have one. I know it's the old-fashioned way of doing it, but just call them up to see if they have it in stock before you go. they probably will!
