I've also heard reports that some people's player died after 6 months or so. I picked up Best Buy's 4 year warranty for $30 or whatever it is. Nice to be guaranteed the player will work for 4 years.

If I had to hamper a guess if you bring this player back to them in 3 years they won't fix.. they'll just replace it with another model..

It's a good player I've used this one (little finicky though) I'm holding out for the next generation myself...

Great player but warm deal. For a few bucks more you can get a new unit at WalMart and not have to wait. I paid 47 bucks for mine this summer. I would suspect that it wouldnt be that much more today.

You can read how to fix the dead after 6 months problem on the videohelp forums. It's a $1.50 part. Yeah, they're cheaply built, but $40-$50 for a divX player ain't bad. For those watching on 50+ inch TVs...why are you looking at $50 players?

There were a lot of dead DVP642s that were caused by bad caps. Maybe the refurbs will actually have that flaw fixed and actually last longer than new ones.

I have one of my DVD642s hooked up to my 48" HDTV projection TV, and the pictrue is great. Much better than the toshiba player I bought at the same time for twice the price.
High bit-rate DivX movies (1.5 - 2 GB files) look great as well.

I bought one for the gf and one for me about a year and a half ago for $50 each brand new. No problems ever.

I remember one review I read before I bought it read "if you can put your grandma on a disc, this thing will play her."

I had one go out within 8 month. Also, make sure you throw away the firmware update disc when you're done with it. My wife thought it was a music disc and put it in and didn't let it do it's thing completly. Now ny DVD player is a paper weight.
