Make sure this model can read 700MB CDR's made on other burners because the other Philips CD Burner model PCRW804 (remember the one that was free after double rebate a while ago?) that also had 8x Write Speed but could only read older 650MB CDRs made with other burners.

good point. i've heard some acer/philips are rebadged ricohs... i know my philips cdd4401 can read and write 700mb (especially taiyo yuden) fine --and it's only 4x4x24.

Although they can write and read on 700MB CDRs that were created on the drive itself, I was reffering to watch out whether they can read 700MB CDR's created with other burners since the other Philips model PCRW804 also with the 8x write speed manufactured prior to certain date cannot.

IMHO, this is not a hot deal. Why?

8x is slow, no buffer underrun protection, and it's a refurb'd unit.

Spend $50 on some CDRW deal around here, get something new and faster.

My $.02

*looks through pile of 80 (some are 79.4, 79.6) minute mixcd copies dj buds have given me burned off their machines*
all of these play fine on my cdd4801 (and extract as same)... maybe i'm just lucky -- been doing it since i bought my compaq in march of 2002...
and people chasing after the latest and greatest somehow end up being the brokest :D and loneliest...
my .02 :)

Some (if not all) of these Philips 8x4x32 cd writers have a MAJOR firmware flaw:
If the drive does not recognize the blanks you are using, it will default down to a much
slower write speed. And the drive does not recognize a LOT of blanks, including many that
are rated at 8x and faster.

I installed one of these drives (a rebadged Iomega, but it was the Philips drive) for someone
and she could never get 8x write performance out of it with any of the (many different brands of)
blanks she tried. 4x was commonly the speed it actually wrote at, and sometimes it seemed even
slower...

$25 is cheap, but I personally would pay a bit more for a different drive.

I refuse to move on since I care about other people being misled by this so called "deal". (why I care? I benefit so much from this forum and I feel obliged to those who contribute the forum in a constructive manner).

This is a very bad deal, considering many people get 32*12*40 rebadged Lite-on burner for less than $20 (from Staples or Officemax), a reliable burner with burn proof and can copy most copy-right protected CDs.

I do not even need to talk about the quality of Philips Burner.

Yeah man, mine too. And I agree, enough of this "praise it or move on" stuff. I wish somebody warned me about the other 8x Philips model that couldn't read 700MB CDRs created on other burners. And that one was free - no money after rebates. Screw free if it doesn't work with 700CDRs. You can't even buy 650MB CDRs anymore.

I've had this drive for about a year (with a staples deal for about $40 ar), and it's wonderful. If you need a cheap CDRW, this is the one to get.

"I refuse to move on since I care about other people being misled by this so called "deal". (why I care? I benefit so much from this forum and I feel obliged to those who contribute the forum in a constructive manner)"

if someone purports to help, then where are links to hotter deals? and who is being misled? i will reread the thread, but i don't see anyone saying "cool! i'm gonna buy seven of these!" methinks it's not altruism that motivates, but a lot of free time (no job) and a good internet connection

"This is a very bad deal, considering many people get 32*12*40 rebadged Lite-on burner for less than $20 (from Staples or Officemax), a reliable burner with burn proof and can copy most copy-right protected CDs."

not everyone wants to pirate, and that deal involves rebates that not everyone gets

not to mention many people are denied(?) the prescence of either a staples or an officemax within their area. plus they are all gone now -- most likely(?)

"I do not even need to talk about the quality of Philips Burner."

see below :D

"Yeah man, mine too. And I agree, enough of this "praise it or move on" stuff."

as is the case with most people on this intelligence level, the poster misses the point COMPLETELY. in links above there are VALID user comments -- we know -- the people who ACTUALLY BOUGHT _THIS_ drive and CAN post about it? also featuring POSTED solutions.

"I wish somebody warned me about the other 8x Philips model that couldn't read 700MB CDRs created on other burners. And that one was free - no money after rebates. Screw free if it doesn't work with 700CDRs."

then *ahem* looks like you have a FREE cdrom on your hands then. lemons make lemonade...
scratch that. someone here will whine that they can't overclock the lemons...

"You can't even buy 650MB CDRs anymore."

i can -- where is one looking for them? sitting on their doorstep? i gues they won't find them there. but like i said earlier (and had to reiterate :() my philips cdd4401 reads and writes 700mb fine...

i own this cdrw and for someone who just wants something that will *gasp* burn a cd, it will fit the bill. some people only have need of a burnner once every couple of months and don't realy care if that cd takes 10 minutes or 2, but they will care that they have an extra $30 in there pocket and didn't have to waste a huge amount of there time pricematching, mailing rebates, and hunting down the best deal on the fastest drive. the title says "Philips 8x4x32x IDE CD-RW Drive for $25" if your not interested then why are you reading this?

yeah, when the philips 804 was free after rebate a year ago or so, I got one and ended up putting it in my sister's computer...she's only used it maybe 3 times (to copy powerpoint/word/etc stuff to cdrw and load it up in class), and those three times it's worked for her. If the person who will be the main user of the drive is anything like my sister, then it really isn't too bad a deal.

if it was me, i'd junk the drive and buy myself a dvd-rw drive (OOOOPS..looks like I already have one! :p)

?not everyone wants to pirate, and that deal involves rebates that not everyone gets?
who said pirating anywhere? What about those who just want to have a backup.

?as is the case with most people on this intelligence level, the poster misses the point COMPLETELY. in links above there are VALID user comments -- we know -- the people who ACTUALLY BOUGHT _THIS_ drive and CAN post about it? also featuring POSTED solutions.?

How do you know I own no Philips. I got three free ones after rebate and ended up trasfering the misery to some guys over auction. I had one at work that I have to use. Experience tells me that people should avoid Philips burner

?not to mention many people are denied(?) the prescence of either a staples?

Are these people intelligent enough to get a rebate from a staples? I had at least $1500 rebate with staples.com and never missed one. I am a person of average IQ and patience. Think about the odd.

"Experience tells me that people should avoid Philips burner."
