Actually my homedepot display says it was subsidized by the local edison company. This is great. Are these bulbs safe for outdoors? I want to use it to light my front door.
 
Just bought 6 boxes of these at lunch. Will be switching out some bulbs when I get home. I might run back and get more and just change out the whole house.

I just did this and had a bunch delivered to my mom. So cheap by the time these die prices will be low enough to not care

Unfortunately the BR40's are still up there in price. 6 months ago Lowe's had the Philips BR30's on sale for $5. I picked up a dozen only to get home to realize that I needed the 40's. What's really surprising is that no one makes a trim converter to shrink down the hole so the smaller bulb doesn't look so stupid, at least nothing I could find anyway.
 
I bought about 12 boxes of these and swapped out almost all of the lights in my house. Still have about another 6 or so light fixtures to get to. Figure these will last 10 years and by then something better will be out.
At $2.49 a bulb, plus whatever energy savings I get it is worth it.
 
Does anyone know if these are suitable for outdoor use? I want to use them inside a porch light fixture, so they will be somewhat exposed to rain. I've been using indoor CFLs in that fixture for years without any problems.

I like the idea that LED prices are falling so rapidly, but a lot of it may be due to power company incentives. Personally I have an backlog of unused CFLs to go through before I switch over.
 
My guess is LED bulbs will go anywhere that regular incandescent or CFL work. In fact, I think LED will work better in any environment. I got a couple of packs of these yesterday and like them so far. No delay on switching on and seem to be 60watt bright, if not more.

For someone who grew up with lousy incandescent that sucked energy and always burnt out at the worst possible time, LED are nirvana. And no mercury like CFL. I just never understood the people who got bent out of shape about incandescent being phased out. That is unless they were believing the energy companies who wanted us to pay more for energy. Or maybe they had some misguided thing about freedom. Right, freedom to spend more money on electricity, which is not the kind of freedom I want.

Anyone got a deals on bulbs with a smaller stem I think its called E12? I've got a ton of those in my place, and haven't see great prices on that size..

Just because you don't want to pay more doesn't mean the other guy doesn't 😛

If I want to spend more money to light my place I should be allowed to do so. It is my wallet after all...

That said, I have a mix of bulbs in my place. Philips LED out on my garage outdoor lights that are on all night and won't be negatively affected by the cold like CFL is, a few CFLs in a couple lights in the house that are on for a few hours at a time, and regular incandescent bulbs in the garage, basement, and some other lights that usually aren't on for very long so the slow turn-on from CFL would be horribly annoying and LED would cost more than necessary for how little those lights are actually used.

All 3 types, used where they each make the most sense. But the stupid government thinks they know better. Why should they even care.
 
I bought 2 packs (4 bulbs) this weekend at my Home Depot, even though I have no idea where I can put them. I've got maybe 3 incandescent bulbs still running, and those only because they're a weird base size - E17 I think, not the E26 standard base or the somewhat common E12 candelabra base. I just couldn't resist the price, I need to think about which sockets which currently have CFLs would benefit.

I've never seen decent prices on E12 base bulbs either, by the way. My attic office fixture takes 3x G16.5 E12 base bulbs, and for a long time you I couldn't find CFLs or LEDs at any price.

Check your local Walmart clearance for LED bulbs as well. I found 4 LED (75W equivalent) spots for my can lights, 7.00 ea, and just last weekend found the E12 candelabra LEDs marked at $4.00 ea along with a few regular socket candelabra LED's mis-marked at $4. hehe
 
Went to the store - 314 in stock and none could be found. Amazing. Home Depot is out of the way for me too.

I am sure my local store (in Bruckner Boulevard, The Bronx) is hiding them. No effort was made to find them and I was left waiting for 20 minutes. Finally just left.
 
got ten two packs shipped to my door for 52$ from home depot . These show 10 years on avg . bought several packs in the store near me , they show 22.8 year life . Sweet or what .

That is how mine was... except they were on some random endcap... not in the isle at all.

Yup, I had to use a phone app to show where in my store they were actually located. Turns out they were on an end cap away from all the others.

Nice try Home Depot... nice try. 😉
 
Saw this thread a few times and finally caved...picked up 10 2-packs for free shipping to the house. Guess I'll start replacing some lights! I picked up enough that my sister can take some for her house if she wants.

I've seen them in a couple of different Home Depots-always in an end cap, never with the rest of the light bulbs. Usually one of the end caps in the front of the store near the registers-for impulse buyers.

I doubt greatly they are hiding them. Every store I've seen them in has hundreds on display.

Here's a helpful hint: If you make the store you are heading to your "Current" location while browsing the item page in homedepot.com, it will actually tell you which aisle and "bay" the item is. In my store's case, it was E1, Bay 001, which is the end cap for the light bulbs. This was exactly where I found them.

I've had lots of obscure items that were hard to find just wandering around the store (and even employees didn't know where the item was), but a quick check of the web site revealed the exact location.

It's not a bad system once you know it's there.
 
Missed this before but 2.50 per bulb is great imo, I ordered some Crees late last year for like 2-3x that. Bought 10 packs and plan on replacing pretty much all our old bulbs.

Not in enclosures. LED bulbs have to be rated for that usage, or they overheat in the enclosed space and burn out sooner.

Right, freedom to spend more money on electricity, which is not the kind of freedom I want.

I ordered mine online and didn't have to hunt for them, but they were in a standalone display close to the garden entrance while I was browsing the store.
