Picked one of these up for new 1.6a rig. Went to BB to look at 955df/a90f. No comparison. The Philips is 1 great monitor. Comes with software called LightFrame2 which is really nice for photos and browsing. If you are in the market, go look at one.

hey 308nato,

you're saying that this monitor you picked up is way better than the 955df? how are u comparing the two monitors? it's not really a good comparison to look at one monitor connected directly to your pc, and another one on the shelf in a store like fry's or BB. the one's in these stores are generally connected through one split video output, and run at 60 hertz, which will look pretty crappy in any monitor.

i'm currently running the 955df, which i got for about $200 shipped from dell a while ago, and seriously doubt that this monitor can be "head and shoulders" above in quality, as i have a beautiful crisp clear picture running 1280x1024 @ 75 hertz. many other users here i'm sure can attest to this.

not trying to shoot down the deal, as i'm sure it's a nice monitor. but i'd personally take a 955df anyday in the 200-250 range over a philips. just my 2 cents.

Hey. I'm not crappin on your monitor. Theres nothing implied that the Samsung sucks. The Philips is better in my opinion. I looked at each one at length and monkeyed with them to my hearts content. I looked at all of them in the same environment. The Philips has a better display. I'm not blind. It has a higher max resolution and excellent refresh. It is lighter, smaller and is not that yellowy color I despise so much for a monitor. The LightFrame software is an added bonus that even threw more points to the PHILIPS because it is really sweet to look at photos and web pages with it running.

I run at 1280x1024 as well but at 85hz. My point is that if you are actually looking to purchase a monitor this week, don't buy without giving the Philips a once over. YMMV as always. Looking at them together I don't see how you could pick the Samsung.

I never crap on anybody's goods because I own plenty that needs to be crapped on myself!!!!!

I've owned 2 philips 107's, one 's' series and one 'mb' let me tell you the s=sucks and the MB is the shiz. Not sure about the 955 but the philips is good at least IMHO. YMMV, and opinions vary of couse. Good deal wish I had the cash. BTW guys I have a mild philips fetish so take what I say with a grain of salt :)

i don't know, this monitor uses shadow mask. aperture grille does have better color but gotta hate the two gray lines. i find the Samsung 900NF in Dell for ~305 a better deal than this. and this is the B version, not P. Also I heard about phillips' rebate will take forever to get back...

I bought a Philips 109B20 a couple of weeks ago at OD. When I bought it was $299 - $70 in MIR. There was a $20 rebate and $50 rebate. The $50 rebate was invalid.
I took it back to OD and they refunded my CC $50 + tax.

I think it's a great monitor. It's one of the more compact 19" monitors I've seen. I'm not using the lightframe software.. I'm using it for a Linux machine. Lightframe seemed kind of stupid to me :)
This monitor also has a 1 or 2 year (can't remember) 48 hour advance replacement warranty, which is pretty awesome. I don't know about anyone else, but that is a pretty damn handy warranty to have in case your monitor craps out.
The full warranty is for 3 years.

Anyway, I would also recommend this monitor.

that 48hr warranty sounds excellent, esp considering its 3yrs
but i really am liking my 955df even though i paid $300 for it (most of a year ago)

if i had any desire to get another 19" monitor at this point i'd definitely consider this philips
still waiting to see some specs comparing the two before making any real judgements...

Why do you guys debate on those $hitty monitors? I used Dell P991/Samsung 900NF/SONY G400, I was not satisfied with none of them, a couple weeks ago, I finally found what I need, SONY G420S, it blew every monitor I have ever seen to nowhere. If you are not short of money, buy this baby. You gotta love it.

As a differing opinion.. Ive seen both of these also, and Id say the Samsung 955df is the nicest non Dell-p991 monitor Ive seen. In fact sometimes I think it may even look nicer.
If someone finds some reviews Id love to see them, although the reviews I saw said the 955 wasnt all that and its one of the nicest ones Ive seen.

Oh, and to top it off I got my 955df for $140 back when Dell had 20% off plus a $30 off coupon and the $40 rebate from Samsung :)
I wish I bought more of them back then!

missclemson,

while it'd be great if everyone had the money to just buy whatever they want, not all of us have an unlimited budget for a monitor. these monitors we're talking about are all in the sub $300 range. none of the monitors u mentioned can meet that criteria. don't thread crap just cuz u have lots of money to blow around.

for those of you out there with this philips or the 955df (i'm one of em), that like it, congrats. :)

I have the 955df and I don't think it can run that high of a refresh rate... I'm pretty sure I can dig up the specs...

*edit* yup I dug up the specs and.......... I'm an idiot. You were right, :). Carry on everyone, nothing to see here but oLLie makin' a fool of hisself.

i actually prefer the KDS Avitron AV-195TF, i run two of them on my radeon8500 retail @ 1600x1200 true colour 85Hz and they are great. i paid $300 @ BB B&M a few months ago with $50 MIR, in fact i just got the two rebates today(2months), so cost was $250x2.

i like these monitors much better that the Samsung, i run one on my test bench and its ok, but doesnt handle high resolutions @ above 75Hz and the screen isnt as sharp as my KDS.

i would definitely say that the Philips display is the weaker of the three, my business parter picked one up at OD a couple weeks ago($315) and it not quite as good IMHO. i would much prefer the Viewsonic, then KDS, then Samsung, Then Mag, THEN Philips.

its hard too find a good 19"er for 250 bucks, and you wont find a viewsonic but i would hold out for a KDS or Mag, the samsung is also nice.

Some of you guys are comparing monitors that are not even in the same price ballpark.

I haven't seen the Phillips in person but from the specs, it looks pretty good but lets compare prices here.

Could have gotten the 955DF for $193 shipped for those didn't have to pay TAXES.
You have to pay $299 + TAX for the Phillips and then wait and wait for the rebate.

For my money, I would pick the 955DF everytime.

I would have prefered running 1280 at 85mhz refresh rate but 1280 at 75mhz is not bad.
I have no complain for a monitor of this quality for $193.

I bought the Philips 109B20 monitor several months ago. I love it and it rocks. It has a great flat display and awesome res. I also love the KDS monitors but bang for my buck I had to go for the Philips. Good luck. I have no real experience with the Samsung.

I mail order most stuff but not a monitor. I'll pay the little extra for this. If I have problems I want to be able to go to the store. Check the warranty on this puppy. I'll pay for that. My brother mail ordered a MAG 19" once. He went thru 5 units before he got a properly functioning one. Waiting, boxing, shipping, calling is not for me guys(gals). I like to use my time wisely, ie. fragfest.

I paid <$300 for all the first 3 monitors I mentioned, and only $350 for the SONY G420S. The problem is, I know how to buy. :)
Never mind.

I checked out the specs for the G420S compared to the PHILIPS. Sony is aperture grille and Philips is shadow mask. Other than that the specs are pretty much identical across the board other than the SONY has a lower max res and vertical refresh. It also comes with the standard (yawn) SONY "authorized service center" warranty. Read weeks without monitor.

Looks like a bargain for only $100 dollars more.

The whole idea of the Samsung was that it was a great deal...a very good monitor for a budget price, made even better by a $50 coupon. No one is saying it's the best monitor out there. But it certainly is a very good value, and that's what this board is all about, right? If you can find a better new 19" monitor for $194 (DELIVERED!), please tell everyone. But these comparisons to more expensive monitors that are more feature-rich don't make sense, IMHO. Who knows what people who buy these things are going to use them for?
