Missing German Nuclear Material Located

A significant quantity of nuclear material declared to be possibly missing from a German research reactor that has been located, United Press International reported on Tuesday (see GSN, Aug. 11, 2010).

German officials had warned that the missing 2,285 atomic fuel sources could have proved dangerous if acquired by hostile actors.

Forschungszentrum Juelich, which operates the nuclear reactor in the North Rhine-Westphalia region, stated on Tuesday that the atomic material not missing, but rather had been converted into atomic waste and enclosed within concrete containers.

The incident had caused significant unease among the German public, with the North Rhine-Westphalia government earlier saying it did not know the material's whereabouts.

German Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen accused state officials of causing massive confusion with the remarks.

"With their speculative comments," the state officials "had only managed to worry the population," Roettgen was reported by the German Financial Times to have said (United Press International, April 5).
