Phenom2 X4 940 vs Core2 Q9400, which one heat more?

Hi,

In practice, which of these two CPUs (Phenom2 X4 940 / Core2 Q9400) produces less heat?

I got conflicting information, may be they are the same but I don't know how I should interpret correctly. Can you please help?

Source 1 (Phenom produces LESS heat): Excerpted from Anantech benchmark http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=3492&p=7

- AMD Phenom II X4 940 (3.0GHz): 109.6W (idle), 189.7W (load)
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 (2.66GHz): 126W (idle), 174W (load)

Based on your experience, can you guesstimate? If the measurement standards are diferent, should the figures from Anantech benchmark be more reliable as the same instrument is used for all CPUs?

But overall system power consumption can be affected by the choice of MB/chipset. So a Phenom II can have lower system power consumption when paired with a 790GX based MB versus a Q9400 when paired with a deluxe X48 based MB. And even in the Anandtech review, the Q9400 has a lower load power value.

Using cpu 'watts' to define 'heat' is probably not really accurate.

Here are some more total system power consumption numbers at idle/load from Anand.

Using these mobos . . . .
Intel DX58SO (Intel X58)
Intel DX48BT2 (Intel X48)
MSI DKA790GX Platinum (AMD 790GX)

Roughly equal at load - at idle the PhII 18% less (the revised PhII C&Q 'rests' at 800MHz).

I imagine even with an OC at stocks volts they will remain roughly equal (the AMD HSF on the 940 may be a 'touch' better). For the most part I think it comes down to your personal preference: Intel or AMD
