I'm planning on picking up a 555BE from microcenter tonight along with their $7.99 board. Any particular batch I should look for, or are all of them ,being C3 stepping, a crapshoot?

They are all C3 steppings. I picked up a EPMW that unlocked to 3.6ghz stable at stock voltage. Not bad for a 99.99 quad core! I believe the CPMW is just as good.

I got one from MC - not sure the batch number - that did unlock, but would not boot into windows.

I told them it was defective and used my one replacement for another one. It unlocked and boot stable into Windows 7. Running it now :D EPMW batch. 3.4 at stock cooling and undervolted. Gonna run some Prime 95 right now.

Ummm whats this about a $7.99 motherboard? Link?

You have to buy one of the following:
Athlon II X4 630 processor
Phenom IIX2 555 BE
Phenom II X3 720 BE
Phenom II X4 965 BE

Then you can get 50 bucks off one of the following

Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-S2H board which after a $10.00 mfr MIR comes to 7.99.
or
ASUS M4A785-M UATX AM3 Motherboard which after Instant Savings and the $50.00 off comes to $29.99.

I have a screenshot of the ad, but I'm at work and don't have a place to host it and can't figure out how to cut and paste it onto Anandtech.

Hello,

I bought a Phenom II x3 with the Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-S2H around a month ago...different but similar deal at that time.

That board is pretty good for a micro board. I've unlocked the 4th core on the x3 and overclocked it to 3.0 with no problems.

I also just found out yesterday that the Gigabyte boards overvolt the Phenom II's...not sure why but you need to set the voltage control to manual in the bios and it will go to the correct voltage. You don't have to set it...just set the voltage control to manual and it sets itself...weird..

Now my temps are very good with the stock heatsink!!

Yeah, its a great board. The only thing it has going against it is 2 dimm slots, but put 4 gb of memory in there and who cares.. thats plenty for most people. HDMI out, DVI out, tons of USB ports.....

I have 2 of those boards and another gigabyte board the 785-US2H that work great.

No crapshoot - I went to my local MC - got stepping with 1004CPMW - unlocked just nicely thanks!. I had it on a Asus 785 / 750 board, just stepped up to Asus 890GX / 850 - & again, unlocked just nice on this board with the 'Core Unlocker' switch!.

CPU is awesome - about to get into overclocking now, currently runs stable at 3.2ghz. :)
