Phenom overclockers. Do they exist on Anand?

Just curious if any of you guys have Phenom's and overclock them? If so, what are your results? Intel fanboy's please refrain from hating. 😛

It was running at 2.5Ghz (default 2.3GHz) but I put it back to default after a couple lock ups. I've yet to really try overclocking.

Aigomorla had one briefly before he got rid of it, if I recall. Sorry, but I don't remember off the top of my head what kind of overclocks he got.

Nanaki333 was the other guy who admitted to owning one.

lol I like how we're talking about owning Phenoms as a thing of shame that must be hidden from the world🙂

Yes, I don't think many have them, since they DON'T overclock hardly at all, and they are not a good value compared to a Q6600. (IMO)

Heh, you simply have to overclock core 1-2-4 and keep core #3 at default speeds. That's how they got phenoms a lot higher iirc. Or was it all BS about core #3 being kaput ?

well that's exactly the point - the Phenoms aren't horrible when we consider them stock for stock, but as soon as you start to consider overclocking there really is no question when the Q6600 can consistently achieve clocks 1GHz higher with relative ease.

I have my 9500 currently OC to 2.68GHz on an ASUS M3A32... its on water... stock voltage.. stable... been running seti for 2 weeks straight 24/7 all four cores.

Like I said, core #3 is said to be the limiting factor in overclocking phenoms. They still don't have the overclocking potential of c2d's, but they do get a fair bit higher if you overclock the cores individually.

This is true. Not sure what the deal is with the third core (#2), but it does limit the overclocking quite a bit. I'm waiting on a better air cooling solution for my setup before I try overclocking again. I'd better hurry up, summer is coming soon!

anyway... i got a phenom.... and have a some third party cooler "GH-PDU22-SC" the point is that I am so scare of overclocking.....

This thread makes me sad for AMD. A call-out to the entire vast community of AT OC'ers, and what, we have less than 5 verified accounts of even owning one? *sigh* 🙁

I'm just tryin' to drive down the price ...

Congratulations on your Phenom. You have reason to be scared

Not really . It is not an easy OC - as an example - From 'dcfan60" at XtremeSystems Forums:

9500 @ 2805MHz

255Mhz FSB
Mem 2.2Volts
Chipset 1.5V
CPU 1.525V
5x HT Multi
9x NB Multi
1.4V On HT/CPU connection
HT is at 1275Mhz
2296Mhz on the NB
5-5-4-15 for the Ram @ 2T
4x 1GB for a total of 4GB
DDR2 667 ram
Windows Vista x64

Noted issues Northbridge multi being 'locked' at 9x - someone came up with a hack to drop it to 8x. Dropping the NB to 1.6/1.8MHz seems to be the current recommendation.

It takes a lot of 'tinker'. Those who succeed tweak CPU/HT/NB/RAM/chipset volts and manipulate hypertransport and northbridge speeds until they find a sweetspot.

And then there is the 'deal' with the third core. There is success in OC'ing that sometimes includes unganging all the cores and either underclocking core2 or clocking it at a rate 2-300MHz below core0, core1 and core3.

I'm trying to hold out as long as I can as B3 reaches roll out - hoping to pick-up a 9500 (or 9550) on the cheap ....

No one seems to have a definitive recommendation or guide to the balancing act.

do they run hot or is it a physical limit of the chip?

A bit of both, I believe.

It seems really wacky - two guys with similar systems were trading notes. The guy with the lower system voltage settings had a higher 'at the wall' power draw

I haven't noticed alot of temp complaints - maybe I'm not paying enough attention. It seems 1.2v - 1.3v is the sweet spot for the cpu though some have cranked it up over 1.4v

Phenom owners should wear black bars across their eyes 🙂 and 'pixelate' photos of themselves ...

oh!!!!.... so is a lot of trouble to get the phenom to a max overclock spot? and how is the B2 affected by that multicore adjustment?
