Phenom II X6 question

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, does anyone here who has used a Phenom II X6 and a Q9550 (for example) know which is faster for games?

I've heard a few reports say the X6 is on par with an i7, depending on the setup. Other folks say it's not that fast. Just thought I'd ask here to see if anyone knows what the deal is. Thanks very much.

Checking again. It looks like, by the bench utility, that the X6 isn't much faster than the Q9550. In some applications it appears to be a little slower. I'd just like to see if anyone was in the same spot as me and hear what they did. Or if anyone else has some advice on my potential CPU upgrade, I'd be interested in hearing it. Thank you.

Not all games are equal.

And regarding your "spot" ... how much is that? Available budget sets limits.

I know that games vary in performance, I guess I was looking for an indicator as to which is faster in the "most" games. Like an overall increase. My budget is probably around $500, I'm interested in the X6 1090t and will need a motherboard also. I don't know if it's possible to re-use my DDR2 but that would be cool.

It is possible to reuse your DDR2, you'll just need a board with an updated BIOS. Buying a S775 mobo and processor wouldn't make sense to me. It's a dead technology. No new products coming out for it.

I'm using an X6 1055T with DDR2 on a Gigabyte 790GP-DS4H board (BIOS not bad but component layout could be slightly better). I think the MSI DKA790GX board is good too.

However, if you want the board to last a while, you may need an AM3 board. It may be possible to use an AM3 board with Bulldozer but that is not guaranteed.

Depending on what clock speed your at with the C2Q, Phenom II isn't really an upgrade. In this case you get 2 more cores which helps in threaded tasks, but gaming the C2Q should still be faster at the same clock speed.

I've done a bit of gaming (Battlefield: Bad Company 2 mostly) with several CPUs and most quad cores with L3 cache perform pretty similar, dual cores lag behind, and quads with no L3 land between the 2. I'm really enjoying the 1055t, swapped over from an i5-750/EVGA P55 setup.

At this point, the difference in games will be little to none, but as more and more games make better use of more cores the gap should start to widen. And how impressive does it sound to have 6 cores at 4ghz?

It was just strange to see people comparing the X6 to a core i7 in some places. I run the Q9550 at 3.6 right now stably.

Hi, I'm (sorta) in the same boat as you...I have a QX6700, P965, 4GB DDR2, 8800GTS G92, etc. I'd like to reuse the vid card + DDR2. Been mulling over selling the Quad and picking up a 1055 + perhaps a Gigabyte MA770 board later this year. IMO, getting 2 extra cores + turbo & such on the cheap is an upgrade, not a sidegrade

If the q9550 is doing everything you want why worry about upgrading? Any moderrn cpu can game just fine. Your video card determines your performance much more than a modern cpu would.

Try to resist turning into a bench babe. So many on this site are nothing more than bench babes and feels they need a new upgrade often.

Really though, your cpu will have no problem pushing a game to high resolutions and high framerates with a decent video card.
