Phenom II on nForce 570 Chipset - Worth It?

I have an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard, which uses the nForce 570 chipset. Although not officially supported on my board, a number of people have the Phenom II running on it.

Does anyone have any idea if there would be a noticeable performance difference running a Phenom II on a 570 chipset based motherboard versus a motherboard with the newer 750/780 chipset?

I'd also like to know as well... I have a nForce590, Asus M2N32-SLI -- apparently the PII will run on it as well, though it says "unknown cpu" and from what I've read just don't expect much in the way of overclocking... but I'd like to know how the performance is on the 570/590 and how it compares to say 790FX (everything at stock speeds) ... if the performance loss isn't to bad it could be a cheap drop in replacement for my 3800x2 ...

I am thinking of getting a 920 for my Nforce 570 board as it is officially supported, but I am trying to scavenge up some funds to get it. I would also be interested in performance of the chipset.

Wow, uh... me too. I have a DFI Infinity NF570 and while the only supported Phenom is the X3 8400, if I could upgrade to a Phenom II it would be a big step up for me from my current Athlon X2 and I wouldn't have to spend $200+ to get a new mobo + CPU combo.

Andrew1990 - which board do you have that is officially supported? I just checked their site and couldn't find any 5xx based boards that are listed as supported.

I tried a Phenom II on my M2N-SLI deluxe and had considerable trouble. The board really needs a BIOS update. You can read all about it on Asus's forums for that motherboard. It's true that the system will post. But for some, they had to take out 2 of their 4 Dimms, windows would crash on startup, etc. I hope that companies will release BIOS upgrades soon, but since none have done so far for 570 based motherboards, hope is fading. On the other hand, ASRock has released BIOS updates for their 520 based boards, so technically these chips should work (and that's the only company who has.)

Andrew1990, that's interesting. It's not listed on the main AM3 support page, nor will it come up if you do a CPU search for compatible motherboards. But if you look at the support page for your motherboard (rev 2.0 - not 1.0 or 1.1), it does list it. You're a lucky guy.

On my Asus M2N-SLI deluxe, the Phenom II 940 didn't work well. I got it to boot, but it would not load up windows vista x64 unless I took out two of my 2 gig dimms. Losing 4 gigs of ram by itself, was enough to kill the project for me. Other than that, windows was very unstable. A reinstall of the OS might have helped, but again, a much faster processor cant overcome losing 4 gigs of ram so I didn't try. Some people on the Asus forums who first reported success with the Phenom II's have found issues after running it for a couple of weeks, an example is on a cold start, sometimes the machine will not post. Most likely, all we need is a BIOS update, but since Asus hasn't released one BIOS update for Phenom II for any AM2 board, I now doubt that they will.
