My understanding is that it could cause data corruption (which could result in corrupted data or a program crashing), but should show up as a specific type of kernel panic (unix/linux) or BSOD (windows). That's based on this post.

I'm not speaking for any companies.

BSOD - system hang - painful itch and swelling - premature ejaculation

Here is the Tech Report Chart on the bug fix.

I think Anand got 2.6GHz out of the Phenom 9500. It's almost tempting at $200 :)

You want to know what happened? ok in a nutshell:

they halted production of the barcelona server chips... they stopped selling phenom to retailers, and gave a big discount to system builders (like dell) to take them off their hands... and made a bios patch that disables the part of the cpu where the problem occurs, for a 10-20% average loss of performance.

Finally, the stated that the fixed version would be rigorously tested... which would have made me wonder, except the problem should have been caught anyways in any halfway decent testing. So its pretty obvious the chips were rushed.

your computer will crash and burn then sing a Xmas song before hopping steadily out the window ... that's the holiday spirit.
