Hasn't the Core architecture eliminated that advantage, though, along with work per watt?

Yep, AMD is now wearing the same shoes Intel was wearing back in the Netburst Prescot days. Not only lower IPC, but also lower max clocks and higher power consumption.

It is the least enviable position to be in, I'm sure Intel is happy to have traded places with AMD in this regard.

How to OC the NB/L3 clock.

Does that mean you can use dividers to lower the frequency to 200 * 8 (with FID) / 8 (with DID) and run the chip at 200MHz for ultra-low-power operation?

Im not to sure about this but probably a no. The above link is something i found reading XS forums and i think its pretty informative but it the lacks more indepth info on each of those dividers such as the possible range of values.

Having a phenom to play with would be nice for a little scientific investigation. (which to me seems more interesting than tinkering around with a wolfdale for example)

However where are the X4 9100e and 9150? Also the phenom X4 9750 and 9650 are OEMs only? i.e the retail market will only see 9550 and 9850?
