I am assembling a new computer and everything is ok except I can't install my nic card! It works fine in my other comps but when I start to install it in my new one the computer starts up!!! It's off when I start but as soon as it goes into the PCI slot it starts it up!! I unplugged the system and installed it but it won't boot up when I plug it in and hit the power switch!!
Other than a exorcism I'm stumped! Any ideas?

Thx

I have a MSI K7T266 PRO2 running WinXP pro, it's a Linksys nic card

Just a thought--It sounds like a bios issue, check your bios to see if its set to "wake up" on lan or such.

Sounds like the strangest problem I've heard in a long time...

Let me get this straight -

Your machine is powered off but still plugged in at the wall - when you plug in the NIC, the machine starts up?

If you unplug the machine and put in the NIC and then plug in and turn the machine on it won't power up?

I would certainly unplug the machine from the wall before trying to put the card in - you could fry something if you are working on it when it powers up. Have you tried a different PCI slot?

I checked bios and wake on LAN is disabled. I will unplug my system in the future but admit I have not done so in the past. I tried slots 3 and 4 so far and had the same thing happen. The card continues to function fine in my other computers. I am going to look around for a spare NIC I know is here somewhere.

Thx for the responses guys!

The power comes on but my diagnostic lights say early chipset initialization, fans are running but no further (no video, etc).
