I'm using XP Pro SP-1A and I get these BSOD messages during the first boot up of the PC when its cold.

If I reboot after the BSOD, it will run fine almost indefinitely. If the PC is WARM or HOT (not ambient but rather after being run), a fresh boot will not result in a BSOD.

What seems to cause these messages? MS's Support site doesn't help too much.

Things simillar to this can happen if your cpu is getting undervolted. Seriously - just search on undervolting over at the silentpcreview.com forums. What motherboard do you have? Though, before overvolting to compensate, you might want to run memtest86/prime95. Also, what power supply do you have?

Hi!

I have an Abit KX7-333 (Apollo VIA KT333) with two sticks of 256MB PC2100 CL2.5 Crucial DDR, an AMD Athlon XP2100+ and some 600W ATX/P4 power supply that has dual fans.

I've run memtest before (on the account of the Crucial rep asking me to run a battery of tests before sending in the ram sticks for warranty replacement) with no problems.

I can't run Prime95 on the first boot becuase the PC will BSOD me out of the OS...

My CPU runs about 50-51C with case/system temp around 29-30C. Yes I know it's not the best cooling but...

Any ideas?

I've tried the Abit Softmenu Default settings for the voltages to no avail.

My GeForce3 was totally fubar'd (screwed up textures, etc...) so I thought it was the AGP vid card... I replaced it with a new XFX GeForce FX 5600 and I still run into the 1st boot BSOD/2nd boot OK situation.

The PC on the 2nd boot always runs smoothly... I score 340 on 3dmark05 and about 2342 on 3dmark03 (comparable to similar systems according to ORB).

Well, the KT333 chipset does have many problems...never owned one, though, so not sure if this could be one of those "glitches".

Do you have the latest bios for the KX7-333?

Also, can memtest load fine on first boot?

If I first boot up the PC cold... I will run into lockups (like editing settings in the Softmenu screens) constantly until about the 5th or 6th. If I let it load into Windows and get the BSOD, its smooth sailing afterwards.

I have the latest BIOS update (8/2003) for my Abit mobo.

My +5V reads about 4.89V using the Hardware monitor software supplied with the mobo. Vsb reads 5.03V, +12V is a bit higher than 12.4V

If I set the FSB to 133 MHz in the BIOS, the POST will read it as 13 x 134 (the clock freq translates to 1 MHz higher than what I set it for in the BIOS).

PFN list corrupt through my experience is usually memory related, usually bad hardware.... could be they aren't making good contact until they warm up. I would also suspect a power supply.

It's a brand new power supply and out of 3 or 4 power supplies I've used on this PC, all of them show +5V a little low and +12V a little high.

I have two sticks of RAM, one on DIMM3 and one on DIMM4 (farthest slots from CPU).

Anything else I should try?

Hmm. Farthest slots from CPU, for DIMMs? Why?

Do you have memory timings set for "AUTO' (or "SPD"), or do you have them specified manually? I agree, it sounds like a possible memory problem, one that might be excerbated by the fact that DIMM slot 1 isn't populated. Some BIOSes/chipsets/whatever only read the SPD data from the first DIMM, and then use those settings for everything. That could be your problem right there.

I've tried both Auto and SPD settings, memory sticks on DIMM1 and DIMM2, etc... to no effect.

Right now I pulled the DIMM3 stick and just have 256MB on DIMM4. I think it solved the problem... I'll have to run more tests but does anyone know why this might solve the problem (running 1 stick instead of 2?) They're both identical sticks of Crucial ram.

UPDATE:

I tried 1 stick of RAM, and kept running into BSOD's and errors.

I swapped to the other stick and my +5V now reads 4.95V

How does that sound? It seems to run reliably now.

Bad stick of RAM?

Please add "Page Fault in Non Paged Area" as the other common error message that I get with my PC.

I ordered some PNY PC2700 DDR (1 stick of 512) to try on this PC.

The CPU should not be overheating as the highest temp I see is about 55C (Ahtlon XP 2100+) and that's in the summer with the CPU running prime95's torture test.
