To the natives, panda express (Pf changs?) is like taco bell. It's just not the same.

Sometimes when I used to bring back panda, my parents wouldn't touch that stuff with a 12 foot chopstick. It stays in the fridge till trash collection.

So I'd have to vote Wan Chai, sounds a little more asiany to me.

Pei Wei wins. I haven't been to PF Chang's enough to make an absolute judgement but I liked it when I was. Wanchai Ferry (which *is* a dinner kit, *not* a restaurant) is excellent for the price - With coupon I can get it for $2.50.

Only way more expensive. I'm trying to be less snobby about chains but the one time I went to PF Changs I just couldn't get past the garish decor of the place. It's almost like it's trying to be a parody of a fancy Chinese restaurant.

Yea PF Changs is expensive as hell. I'd rather go to Panda Express cus the food is the same and cheaper.

I very much prefer authentic, but I still eat the Americanized stuff. Its a different type of food IMO.

I'm with you on both counts, but there is no earthly reason to go to PF Changs, imho, as it sells a mediocre version of Americanized Chinese at actually higher prices.

Yeah, I went there once with a friend for his birthday. It was a bit better than your standard Americanized Chinese restaurant, but it was not worth the high price.

How much was the bill for PF changs & what did you get? I usually don't eat at the americanized places.

greasy Orange Chicken for t3h wins "authentic" Chinese food = boring, no flavor and next to no meat. Americanized every time baby.
Funny, usually when I go to an authentic chinese place, and order their "orange chicken" or beef and broccoli, there's waay more meat than the stuff from panda express.

So I take it ubiquitous chain restaurants are common over there? Most restaurants here are unique/owner operated joints, and with the exception of fast food, chain restaurants are the minority.

it depends on the city/state

when i lived in New York.... the 'chinese take out' places were owner/operated joints... you couldn't go a mile without passing one. PF Changs/Pei Wei were unheard of.. and Panda Express was only at the airports or mall kiosks.

here in colorado... PF Changs/Pei Wei/Panda Express are all over the Denver/Aurora metroplex... and owner/operated joints are few and far between... and the quality sucks at them.

I agree, TST --> Central is the Ferry.

I can't believe all these white fools who think PF Changs is a real Chinese restaurant because of the higher-than-Panda-Express pricing and sit down style.

Most "Americanized Chinese food" places like my local 99 ORANGE CHICKEN are more authentic than that shit

I prefer to take the Star Ferry over the Wan Chai Ferry.

Pei Wei is the 'takeout' arm of PF Changs... same company... smaller restaurant.

Isn't that odd? It's a hell of a lot better food than PF's, particularly when you consider the expense. PF's tries to dress shit up, but misses the fundamental point that just like Mexican food, simpler is better. I'd actually drive an hour to get AWAY from PF's, if it were my only choice. I'd rather eat gas station hot dogs than that crap.

EDIT : Panda Express is even worse, if that's possible, at most of the locations around here. The rice is usually dried out, the broccoli and veggies look like they came from a fridge in Fallout 3, and the meat is pretty sad as well. I will say that the quality at PE varies drastically from one location to the next though. I've been to a couple that were pretty decent, and then others that I simply turned around and walked out from.

nope.. honestly doesnt surprise me... PF's probably has chefs in the back cranking out dishes without regard to orders ... mass production if you will..

Pei Wei personally makes the dish when it gets ordered. i know, because the one by me has the woks out in plain view, and when you order, the slip goes to the chef who then makes the dish, similar to actual takeout places.

I don't go to Panda Express, I go to a place called China Kitchen which gives me about 3x the orange chicken of P.E. for a buck less. I can eat my ass off and it can last me 2 full meals.

Small Chinese spots > chains.
