Pets should be included in Evacuations

Typical, lets not pass bills to fix the human side of the equation. Lets deal with animals instead.

I admit the thought of all those pets starving to death is very sad for me. I cant imagine leaving my two cats behind. But humans should really come first when it comes to evacuations like this. What is this guy going to say when 500 people died because everybody had a pet that got space over a human?

I'm sorry, pets are nice and all, but if my child missed out on any rescue attempts because of extra effort and/or supplies spent rescuing a pet, I'd be damn pissed at somebody.

In life or death situations, humans >> animals.

This won't be a popular opinion, but the government doesn't need to spend money to rescue what amounts to property. Not particularly valuable property at that. Sentimental value or not the resources need to be focused on the people, not their property.

The people that stayed behind for their pets accepted a risk, & many of them lost - The government is not responsible for their stupidity, nor should the government be forced to make evacuation more attractive to convince people to do it.

This is an attempt to fix the human side of the story. 500 people stayed at home since they couldn't take their pets, and then those people died. All the time shelters had plenty of room for people and pets.

That's their own stupid fault then.

I love my cat but if it comes down to leave to save my ass or stay to protect hers, she's going to die. I might even go so far as to humanely destroy her if it looked like she was SOL anyway.

They dont know that, nobody knows how many people stayed behind because of that. Sounds to me like more people stayed behind because nobody had a way to help them out.

And if somebody is dumb enough to stay behind because of a pet. Then that is their choice and they can suffer the consequence. If pets get involved and people die because of it that is idiotic.

My 500 number was as made up as your 500 number was. Our government attempts to pass laws to save peoples lives. Even idiotic people. There are many idiotic people, and maybe this will help a few of them without seriously causing much harm.

I know but the senator who proposed this waste of legislative time said "he heard some people stayed behind". He has no idea how many people stayed behind and he has no idea if this will do anything to get the idiots who stayed behind this time to come out.

Chances are when you add a pet it will cause humans to not be allowed onto the evacuation bus.

All I can go off of is the news coverage. Every channel showed multiple examples of empty police boats trying to get people to leave the flooded area. They refused one after another to leave since they wouldn't leave the pets. The boats were empty, so no humans would have been displaced. It isn't like in a real emergency that pets would be moved on and humans who wanted to come would be left to die.

Gay pride parades?

;)

Personally, I don't think Congress needs to be creating legislation like this. It should be up to the judgment of the rescuer.

I am confused by your point.

If there were limited busses, and the seats were full, no one would put a pet on and force humans to stay behind. That would be true with Katrina too.

But in reality, the pets and people aren't going to/from the same places. It isn't like they would be competing for the same bus in the first place. People bussed to human shelters. Pets bussed on separate busses to pet shelters. Obviously the busses would transport the people first then pets if there is time. Or maybe, just maybe more busses will be operating due to this legislation so there is the ability to save that many more people.

So people allergic to cats should have to put up with people's dang furballs on a crowded bus or living facility?

What about all the nastiness associated with it? I mean the dogs and cats are gonna poop and pee everywhere. Why should I have to put up with that? I'm sorry, if you are rich enought to have a pet, you need to be rich enough to take care of it during a disaster. If you can't o well.

Only the cute and furry ones like dogs and cats and bunnies. The scary pets like snakes and rats and lizards can't come.
