Pete Stark is an outstanding congressman, one of the best. He's my Congressman; I've talked with him a number of times and visited his office in Washington.
He is very well educated and founded a decent sized bank. During the Vietnam war, he put a huge peace sign on the side of the building, and he ran for Congress largely because of that issue, and has been there ever since.
He's a vet, and he's against the terrible use of the military - the misuse - by the Bush administrations, and I was proud to watch him tell high school kids he hoped that they would not enlist under the current president.
He's a pit dog, and the chickenhawks don't like that. He has a mouth on him to them - and the right can criticize it only if they show me they equally condemned Cheney's 'go F yourself'. (I'll criticize both of them for the profanity).
He's also a specialist in the politics of health care, and every year introduces a bill for a constitutional amendment for the right of every American to health care.
He values democracy - he regularly holds townhall meetings to meet the citizens and answer questions.
I don't think his comment here about Bush's amusement is literally accurate, but I think it accurately reflects the level of Bush's concern about the troops - about zero. We learned what we need to know about Bush's respect for other when he accepted the jump ahead of 500 others on a waiting list for a national guard spot in the states, to avoid going to a war he was in favor of for others to battle in, putting someone else from the list into harm's way.
Stark has been named 'most liberal member of Congress', and that's a good thing IMO.
Excellent Congressman.
