Chicago - An animal rights group wants Illinois to install highway signs in memory of cattle that died when trucks hauling them flipped in two separate wrecks.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants to buy the markers, one in suburban Chicago and one northwest of Peoria. PETA's request to the Illinois Department of Transportation says the signs would pay tribute to the more than 20 head of cattle killed as a result of negligent driving in Illinois this year.

Ashley Byrne of PETA says the effort is part of a national campaign to call attention to how cattle suffer in the meat industry.

IDOT spokesman Josh Kauffman says the request likely will be denied. Rules require that only relatives who lost loved ones in highway crashes may request roadside memorials

So if they find a relative they're good to go? Awesome. I for one would find no end to pleasure in knowing such markers existed.

Hmmm, bulk beef crashing on the road makes everyone sad.

Right next to what's left of the alternator.

PETA are always good for a laugh. That is until you realize they support eco-terrorist organizations like the ALF.

These kind of things totally undermines their other genuine efforts..

That must be the case, because as far as I know they have no genuine efforts. I honestly have only heard about their off the rocker bullshit and pay them no mind.

They have successfully pushed many regulations for humane treatment of animals and birds before they are slaughtered for food... visit their website, homepage will have information about many of their efforts that are not total crap, well... unless you think tree hugging is crap

No, basically everything they do is just retarded stunt after retarded stunt that serves no purpose but to make animal rights activists look like complete buffoons in the eyes of everyone else in the world. It's a shame we don't have a real Jurassic Park that we could drop PETA members into and see how well they survive with their "ethical" treatment of things that actively want to eat them. After a week, you think any one of them would be campaigning to get Mario banned for his raccoon suit?

Why not make a memorial for all the deers being hit by vehicles on every road which has had such an incident or for all the fish people have killed in aquariums over the years.

I demand memorials for all the squirrels killed each day on our roads.

nature's little speed bumps deserve that much.

So for the 23,000 dogs and cats PETA killed in the last decade, did they build a memorial themselves?

I can't believe I'm going to defend PETA here, but...

PETA fights against the exploitation of animals. Putting unwanted pets down is in no way exploitation, and given the vast number of unwanted pets is the most humane (and dare I say ethical) thing they could do.

I would agree with you, except for the fact that shelters in general have far FAR better kill ratio than PETA (50% compared with 90%).

Also, kill ratios at shelters have been trending better, the same cannot be said with PETA.

This would make more sense if PETA didn't oppose pets entirely. PETA an shelters don't even attempt to find homes for the 'unwanted' pets. They've got to spend the money on road side markers for beef, apparently.

This makes sense. Doesn't PETA stand for People Eating Tasty Animals?

Peta is a disgrace to animal activists. I'm all for being ethical to animals and all that, but peta is just making huge fools of themselves. Like, do they even try to actually stop animal cruelty anymore? Seems they are simply seeking attention in the stupidest ways.

At one point, they were getting undercover footage of Proctor and Gamble's animal cruelty, Iam's killing cats and dogs etc... this was good. Now, they're just being stupid.

Should order a bunch of meat lovers pizza and send it to them. LOL. Chances are this has already been done many times... lol
