On the opening day of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City, PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. set up a "graveyard" with dozens of tombstones to focus attention on the thousands of animals killed in shelters yearly and to protest breeding practices.
The group demonstrated outside Madison Square Garden where the 134th edition of one of the oldest and most famous dog competitions was being held.
On their website, PETA states "When people buy a dog or cat from a breeder or pet store, they are subsidizing more breeding and at the same time denying a homeless animal in a shelter the chance to find a home. Because animal shelters are so severely crowded, people who buy animals instead of rescuing them give shelters no choice but to euthanize healthy, loving animals".
These pictures were taken on Monday, February 15, on Seventh Avenue and 33rd Street in midtown Manhattan, by the entrance to Madison Square Garden.

Stop me if I'm wrong, but don't PETA operated shelters kill more animals per year than other shelters? Hypocritical jackasses.

Seeing as we are unfamiliar with rhetoric and sarcasm, I shall refrain from using such complicated language conventions while conversing with you.
 
Well, it appears the point of their protest was completely missed on you (or you chose to ignore it). I'm not a big supporter of PETA's methods, but their point isn't specifically about euthanize, it's that you should be adopting pets from shelters so that they don't HAVE to be euthanized rather than supporting people breeding more of them (and often in horrible conditions).

Problem is, if you adopt a several-year-old dog from a shelter, you're probably not going to get the dog you want and it's probably not going to be very enjoyable.

IMO, my choice and happiness as a consumer > someone's opinion that abandoned dogs are more important than bred dogs.

And from their protests, its obvious they have no idea what Westminster is. These are not puppy mill breeders. These are high class, show quality animals. These breeders breed one or two litters a year to the highest standards possible, the animals are given full exams, x-rays, vaccinations, DNA tests, etc. Animals that don't meet the quality standards for the breed and show are adopted out, but not to PetCo or PetSmart.

If PETA would actually protest a puppy mill, I wouldn't have a problem with it. This is just another case of them showing their stupidity.

And you don't think those puppy mills are there to cash in on that 'pedigree perfect mentality' of 'I'm special because my dog has papers', show dog crowd? You too can have a pure breed for cheap.
 
westmininster dog show is nothing but bullshit. comparing two working class breeds against each other like a rottweiler and a german sheppard is beyond stupid. and then the best of show is the best example of a breed out of all the breeds that are shown?? god i hate that dog show. and dont even get me started on the bullshit that is the AKC.
 
The problem with adopting pets nowadays is that it's about as tedious and intrusive as adopting a child. It's much easier for someone to slap down $100-$1000 bucks, no questions asked at a breeder than to have to go through an intrusive life history, background check, and home review by an adoption agency. This doesn't include that some adoption agencies will do check-ups at your house to make sure you are raising the animal the way they see fit.

no but the whole idea of the stupid WDS creates puppy mills. when the springer won best in show in the 90's, springer spaniel puppy mills popped up all over the place which created serious genetic issues of aggression. the latest is Chihuahua's but that is due to all the dumbass "Chihuahua" movies that have been made.

PETA wants the destruction of all large breeds of dogs, from pit bulls, to mastiffs, to rotts. I care absolutely none for what they say and I wish people would stop being so fucking ignorant to what they really stand for and want so they would just go away.
 
I just can't wait for the virus that kills all dogs and cats so they'll start breeding Apes for pets.

And you'd be completely wrong. I adopted a 3 year old dog 5 years ago. Awesome dog. The problem is the ignorance about shelter/rescue dogs.

I also rescued a 10 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback. Another great dog.

Purebreds/mutts of any age/temperament can be found thru shelters/rescues. The problem is people are too lazy to make the effort.

Partially, after the Dalmatian movie and now the Chihuahua movie, people think they're cute and want these dogs. To meet demand, puppy millers go into action and when these people realize that their cute little puppy requires a lot of work and responsibility, shelters/rescues are flooded with these dogs.
 
You can adopt AWESOME dogs. I can understand why people wouldn't want to adopt a dog if they want a specific breed etc, but if you want a companion there's absolutely no reason you shouldn't look towards a shelter. My best friend has adopted two amazing dogs in the last two years. They really are incredible animals.
