When filling out an address on a web form... ALASKA does not come before ALABAMA. Yes, it's true, in state abbreviations, AK does come before AL, but when the entire state name is written out on the form dropdown...

(This happens on so many websites it's ridiculous)

I don't have an issue with the order of them, I have an issue that they exist. There should just be a zipcode and the website fills in the rest, if it doesn't resolve correctly it gives you the option to add/edit it.

Especially since it seems to be quite easy to determine the country of origin of an incoming request. Automatically preselect that stuff, dammit!

Mine: Pressing "P" on the listing results in Palau - especially if I'm selecting a ground shipping option for something. The only way it's getting there by ground is either by waiting for continental drift to shuffle things around, or wait until the Sun starts to die and the oceans evaporate.

Population: 20,956
Per-capita GDP: $8100
Needs of the many, dammit! I want my extreme Internet convenience! :p

Another annoyance: The text-boxes for phone numbers that automatically jump to the next box, but if you try Shift-Tab to go back if you made a mistake, it just bounces the cursor forward again. (Along that same vein, I also hate sites that use some kind of redirect so that if you hit Back, it won't work properly.)

I hate it when the "State" field allows you to type more than 2characters.

They should always just limit it to the 2 letter abbreviation.

My bet is you are seeing it in "XX - XXXXXXX" format. If not the coder did a pisspoor job sorting on a hidden piece of data.

I dislike the fact that I have to select Espanol or English to continue my ATM transaction.

Pet peeve: mandatory State field on forms, even when you select a country other than USA. Yes, believe it or not some countries don't have states.

I hate it when the "State" field allows you to type more than 2characters.

Not every country has the 2-letter abbreviation.

Who actually selects shit with the mouse in those boxes? Click dropdown, start typing, stop typing when you hit your own country.

1. Not enough people live in Alaska to validate fixing the error
2. No one in Alabama can spell or abbreviate Alabama (except transplants like Skoorb) so they won't be complaining anytime soon

I hate the fact that while you can type everything else, they make you choose the state from a pull down menu.

They have computers in Alabama?

You know we have the second largest research park in the United States and the fourth largest in the world, right? :p

Yeah...but their wasting all those resources because they're still trying to figure out how to install the upgrade version of Windows 95 on their 486s without having to buy the full retail version.

I'll give you a hint. (use a dos floppy and all 1's as the serial number during the install) :D

While we are on the subjhect of random web page rants:

I was applying for a job and listing previous companies I worked for was a requirement along with a current phone number and the name of someone they can contact at that business. Well - one of the companies I worked for went out of business 4 years ago. Fortunately they had a box that you could check that said 'Company has gone out of business'

What it didn't do was remove the requirement for a phone number or contact person at that company - which no longer existed.

I am not sure what purpose this button served....

You can type into those menus.
Not really. Most of them are set up so that typing a letter takes you to the first entry that starts with that letter and typing the letter again will cycle through those entries. For example, I live in Oregon (OR). If I type O, then R, the web form will take me to Ohio, then Rhode Island. That's obviously not correct. I have to type O three times to cycle through Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon (four times if Ontario is thrown in). It's not really that inconvenient, but it's certainly an improvement where a web form only asks you for your ZIP code and fills in the city and state for you.

This is what makes it even worse actually. For Nevada, I never know if I have to type n-v or n-e, or sometimes I just have to hit N repeatedly to go through the list.

Better question... why make you even fill out your state at all if they have a zip code field?
