Pet peeve: "Pride" about losing weight after stomach stapling...

This will probably come off as harsher than intended, but an in-law was very over weight all of her life. She recently (2 years?) got gastric bypass surgery and now the results are really showing. Everyone is so "proud" of her and she has this certain "I can do anything I set my mind to!" smugness to her. It doesn't make her a bad person, but did she really overcome anything to get to where she is?

Al Roker has also been pretty smug about his dramatic weightloss due to surgery.. What gives, stop being proud - you're cheating!!

Or maybe I'm just bitter, a fatty who's not fat enough to get the surgery (nor can he afford it!)

I agree with you completely.

yeah, why should they all of a sudden feel good about themselves or have confidence!!!! We should make them eat so much the staples burst.

Let's not take it to an extreme. No harm in feeling sexy about yourself or discovering new curves, etc. That's awesome. But the attitude, the illusion that you've accomplished something.. That's what I find annoying.

You do realize they have to drastically change their eating habits, don't you?

nope, they just instantly lose 200lb's. Don't you know how the surgery works?

They're proud they did something about the situation and obtained successful results?

Well, but "doing something about it" was pretty passive in this case - paying doctors.. Vs. watching what you eat and hitting the treadmill.

Again, i'm a fatty myself. I'm not knocking being fat. I'm also not knocking gastric bypass. But to assume that YOU are more successful than the fatty who works his/her ass off, trying to burn some calories and watch what they eat (yet still doesn't have much success).. That's odd to me.

From what I've been told, the aftermath of the surgery is quite miserable. It's a total change in lifestyle as well. Much to be proud of if they stick to to program. I think you're being a little too harsh.

they couldn't have done this prior to surgery?

if you're at the point where you need to lose 200+ lb's, its about more than just saying "hey, I'm going to just eat broccoli and water from here on out."

They are proud of their unsightly scar, of course sames this is a female she can probably just pass it off as a c-section.

I think that was sarcasm, but it's hard to tell... some of the people around here might actually believe that

Exactly true! I could watch what i eat but I'm left with hunger pangs and temptation.. They throw up if they eat too much and eventually get conditioned into "watching what they eat".. it's cheating still, if you ask me.

Kudos to them for losing weight, but the pride is what I continue to question. I'd be *happy* to be trimmer, but I would be proud of the doctors and scientists out there, not myself.

if you don't think there is something mentally wrong with a person who is 200+ lb's overweight, then.....i don't know.

edit * misread what line you quoted me, yes it was sarcasm obviously.

You do realize that for some there is actually something physically wrong too, right?

either way, doesn't really make a difference.

Yea, kinda does. If someone has a physical issue which keeps them constantly hungry, then a medical solution to that issue seems relevant.

Being proud of losing weight after a stapling is like a prisoner in solitary confinement being proud that he isn't getting into fights anymore.
 though, it's better than just staying morbidly obese forever.

but evidently not as miserable as reducing calories and exercising without surgery.

you realize not everyone who has the surgury loses the weight. And some lose the weight only to gain it right back.

If after the initial time when you have to be very strict with your diet you go back to eating sugars and stuff you will gain the weight back.

They are pround of the stretch marks and extra skin, give them a break.

From what I've heard, insurance will pay for the staple, but you have to pay out of pocket for the cosmetic surgery to fix your skin.
