Weak rant to follow

I get that it's cool that modern GPUs allow specular highlights & maps, bump mapping and the like. But really, does absolutely everything have to look like it's covered in a layer of slime? I'm tired of seeing character faces shine like they are made of marble. I'm tired of seeing rocks that look like they are made of glass. And water that looks like jello. Enough already.

I feel the same way except toward post processing. I think blur effects are abused.

It is used to cover up shoddy textures and/or geometry mostly. Good way to cut a corner if your assets aren't up to snuff or you need to cut corners for performance.

I agree, it sucks, blur sucks, bloom sucks. I hate bloom the worst. Look at sheet of white paper and it is like starring into a supernova most the time.

The last time I went on a rant about this, everyone told me I was stupid. (maybe because I used BF3 as my example)

you want a perfect example of bloom being bad? Play ff14. Everything's shiny and blooming and glowing, and the market ward looks like there's a miniature sun on your character.

I have very low expectations for the next generation of graphics considering there hasn't been any real improvement in 5 years

I think bloom is the most overdone effect.

That became common on the console side to cover up the fact they really havent been able to improve graphics quality since the Xbox 360, which is now several years and one whole generation behind.

I been reading the console forum a bit and no one has yet come up with a single game on both systems where the PS3 version looks remarkably better, unless there is some sort of bug and when it gets fixed they look the same.

Try some Fallout.
Neither FO3 nor FNV require the use of bloom, nor specular shiny/fuzzy lighting; though turning the latter off screws up some interior lights, and you have to disable it by editing the INI. I can't play any game very long with all those eye-searing surfaces.

I got used to them but will fully admit they are not needed. Its kinda like mood lighting whenever you transition to a special area, like when you first leave Vault 101, or when you go into the sacrificial chamber under Vault 11 (I think) but for the most part they overdo it and I dont like looking at it every 10 steps.

What do you expect them to do to sell new GPUs?

COD4 = smooth
MW3 + 37000 passes of specular lighting = need to upgrade

moar specular = moar monies
