Pet help: best ways to help combat shedding

I've searched, and if shed, shedding, and dog shed don't give me anything, then feel free to crucify me if you find one I missed.

I've got a 3-year-old Yellow Lab that we adopted (Thank you Safe Harbor!!!) in September, and he's shedding like there's no tomorrow. Our clothes have so much fur on them that the wash isn't even taking it out. We've got a furminator, but that doesn't seem to be helping that much. As for my clothes, I use a regular lint roller, but that isn't exactly taking care of things either.

We have all wood floors in the house, which I swear is worse than carpet because if you walk in socks, they pick up the hair (instead of it being stuck in the carpet).

I know there are a lot of dog lovers here, so PLEASE help me handle all the hair. Any tips or tricks you've heard of would be greatly appreciated.

Also, for those with a Furminator... can it be used every day?

1) Remove fur
2) Dress in warm clothing

Edit-You're pretty much screwed. Just brush him every few days to remove as much of it as possible and don't wear black clothing. 😉

Shave it. I shave our Shepard every spring, summer and fall. She's loves it being built for -20 and not ever seeing those temps and does not shed. Used to be a huge issue my wife made me keep her outside.🙁

You really just have to brush the shit out of them. It's all that undercoat that keeps coming out. If you don't shave the dog, get a furminator, a long bristled wire brush, and a short bristled rubber one. That'll get almost all of it.

Can you use the Furminator every day or will that hurt the dog?

By the way, we've had wind chills in the negative teens for about a week now, and shaving the dog is not an option.

Yes you can use the Furminator everyday. Just do not use it if the hair is tangled or knotted unless you want the dog to bite you 🙂

I used to raise Great Pyrranese and you just have to brush them every day. They would bring me their brush when they wanted some attention but, I started brushing them as pups.

I use my furbuster brush. Removes the dead hair and leaves a nice coat. I mean, the dog still sheds so i vacuum every week. I've learned to live with ti. The annoying part is when i take her in my car. because I can't vacuum my car easily.

So I read one person mention vacuum on the furniture... any other suggestions? We don't have a vacuum (only a small hand-held) because we have only wood floors.

I had 2 cats for years, and they shed all over the place. It was insane. I now have a golden retriever, and she sheds quite a lot as well.

First, some dogs have a seasonal shed. I'm not sure about the lab, but maybe this is the case. My golden shed like crazy in spring and again when it started getting cold. So, it might slow down?

I use the Furminator. That thing really does work. You have to be diligent about it though, doing it once or even twice a day if the dog is shedding a lot. This reduces our fur by a lot.

Other than that, just learn some basic strategies to keep the hair off the floor as much as possible. We have a lot of hardwoods, so I use one of those janitor-style brooms that I can use to sweep the whole house in maybe 15 minutes. It gets everything, and really there's almost no hair on my floor.

For upholstery, get yourself some sponges and wet them slightly. Use this to wipe off any hair. It works wonders.

Finally, there are some diet options you can try. I've had limited success with them, but you might. This includes shed control food, snacks and even shed control shampoo.

Get one of those "hammocks" for the car. We use this on ours and keeps any dirt, hair, etc. right where it should be. If we need to clean it we just take it out and rinse it off. No big deal.

They sell these things at PetSmart and PetCo I believe.

I'd suggest against the vacuum for furniture and floors (even those made for hardwoods), but that's just me. I find it a lot easier to use the sponge + a little water trick. It takes about 60 seconds to do the whole couch, rug, etc.

The other trick is of course to just keep the dog off the upholstery. My dog doesn't get to hang out on the couch, so it never has a problem.

And per my other thread, I highly suggest just getting one of those big mops (I think they call them dry mops?). Just run around the hardwoods with it. Quick, painless and no clogging issues with a vacuum cleaner.
