A pet rat intrigues me. I've heard they're extremely smart for their size.

They reek. Even with their scent glands removed. They are cool, but not worth keeping as pets.

What a bunch of misinformation:roll: I have had many ferrets so I can speak from first hand experience.

Let me disspell the myth that ferrets stink. If you care for them, bathe them, and have them descented and neutered/spayed, they do not stink anymore than any other pet. I have had people in my home and they dont even realize I have ferrets until they see the cage. Hell, dogs and cats can stink up a house much more quickly than ferrets.

Ferrets can be trained just as cats to use a litter box and do so just prior to play time out of the cage. It is quite easily taught to them with a corner litter box in the cage and a reward system. Raisins make great treats/rewards for the little guys as well as peanut butter on a spoon:)

I will however point out that if you do not have time to properly care for them and spend time playing with them you wont likely be happy with them as pets. Ferrets do not like to be caged up and left there. They need a minimum of 2 - 3 times a day out of their cage for an hour or so at a time. They are funny little guys and make excellent playmates for kitty's also. I would certainly suggest getting a minimum of two because they are quite sociable animals and will get lonely by themselves.

Any other questions, feel free to ask

I used to have a ferret. It was a good pet. Yes it smelled like a ferret even though it was descented and I washed it all the time.

A ferret is very intelligent and isn't like a hamster or a bird that just sits there in a cage doing its own thing. My ferret used to stand up with its hands grasping the bars and would shake the cage and look at people in the house, trying to get out. It figured out how to get out, and used to break out of its cage and then break back in when it wanted to sleep in its hammock.

One night I fell asleep, and woke up the next morning with the ferret curled up next to me. It broke out of its cage, ran upstairs, climbed up in my bed and went to sleep.

Also, when I used to come home, my ferret would run from wherever it was and stand next to my feet and look up at me. It wouldn't stop doing this until I picked it up and gave it a hug.

Your friend didn't know anything about ferrets, obviously.

I had ferrets; they're a whole lot like cats. They use a litter box and they're incredibly playful.

They do smell a little, but if you keep their cage clean, it's not bad at all. You can't bathe them often, once or twice a month at the most, because the more you bathe them the more they give off a scent, ironically.

You need to clip their nails, just like a cat. They need a lot of attention, like a dog. If you're going to get a ferret, it's best to get two. One will be miserable unless it has company.

They need to go to the vet just like cats. They need shots, etc. They're actual pets, not just something that you can look at. As I said, they need attention, a LOT of attention, actually. They're not tempermental; they're playful, but they have extremely sharp teeth, and while they'll bite you playfully, it can hurt.

Watching two ferrets play together is a lot of fun.

Also, get a VERY large cage if they're going to be caged most of the time, and make sure you secure the litter box down, or else they'll turn it over :D

We have two right now, and have had as many as 7 at a time. They do tend to stink when they're upset or frightened, and if they're not de-scented, they stink a lot. They are insane and are very tenacious, but most do not bite that much. They tend to poop in corners so if you let them run free in a couple rooms, place some litter boxes in the corners. Also, they are extremely mischivious and get into everything. If you get one, be sure to ferret-proof everything. That said, they are amazingly funny and are definitely the most entertaining pets you can have.

I used to have 2 ferrets, too, before I moved away to CA for school and couldn't take them with me. They were great pets, IMHO. They only stink if you don't take care of them, and it's not even they that stunk, really, but it was their litter box if it didn't get changed.

I'm probably going to be moving back to Washington in the next 6 to 12 months, and when I do, I plan on getting two more ferrets. I'm really looking forward to it, actually.

They are cute, but they stink badly. They have a musk gland, so there isnt anything you can do about.

Well it looks like the topic was pretty well covered as for what I was gonna say.

I have had a few friends when I was younger who had them, they are cute and fun to play with, but yes they will bite sometimes and they SMELL NASTY, the smell will migrate throughout your whole house.

Just go to the pet store or breeder or wherever you want to get one and smell the area around their cage. If you don't think it's bad, then consider getting two. Make sure the area is clean. If you take care of them and clean up their litter box often, they'll smell less than the pet store/breeder.
