Personality and field of study...

Orsorum

Lifer
Has anyone noticed any correlation?

Just curious, 'cuz my TA's for statistics and economics seemed to be fairly similar in their style and personality, in the way they responded to people, etc. It was the same for my mathematics TA's and computer science TA's... TA's for the same subjects tended to act similarly to each other. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I'm thinking that a personality's difference in the way they look at their work and the way they approach classwork would have an effect on their choice of career.

Thoughts?

I'd agree with you to a point.. You do have to wonder whether it's personality having an effect on class choice, or if it's the classes having an effect on the personality, though. 🙂
When I took film classes everyone there was a snotty, pretentious jackass, but that could either be because snotty, pretentious jackasses are attracted to the film industry, or it could have been because all the teachers were snotty, pretentious film critics and forced you to think like them.

Then again, you do have CSCI majors (quiet, introspective), Political Science (lots of Greeks, partiers), Philosopy (neo-hippies), etc.. The only major I've found with a WIDE dispersion of personalities is mine - psychology. You get ALL kinds of people in there.

So far the only thing I've noticed as a constant is that CSCI professors never make sense, and CSCI TA's are always foreign, incoherent FOBs who get mad at you if you don't understand something. One reason why I switched majors. :|

Yeah, there is some truth to this, introverts tend to go towards professions where they have less human interation. Even those introverts who go into medicine can still be pathologists or radiologists and not really have to deal with people as much as a family medicine doc. But yeah, the research field is populated with a lot anal retentive introverts, though there are a lot of lazy geniuses as well. Just so you know that a certain field or profession doesn't attract just ONE type of personality, though it does attract more of a certain kind than another. And there are always exceptions to the rule. I'm almost too extroverted for what I do . . .

Interesting theory.

Ok, so based on personality what profession should I be in? I can't seem to find my niche. 😕

What's your personality? What kind of subjects do you like? 😛

As off the wall as it sounds, I find that people with similar auras tend to pick similar majors..makes sense I guess as it's a reflection of personality. It's just wierd sensing this big bulk of dark blue/purple auras in a room full of CSCI majors. 🙂

(Yes, I read auras. I'm a freak.)

Lol, I dunno. I'm not going to launch into detailed explanations of my intricacies. I just hope I find my niche soon.

amnesiac 2.0: Fascinating. 🙂

there have been studies that explore the correlation between Meyers-Briggs Type Indicators and professional preferences. For example, most "computer scientists" (I don't mean anyone who likes computers) test as INTx's
