Personal Self Defense: Collapsible Baton?

So what is everyone's thoughts on using a collapsible baton for self defense? This would be for my gf, obviously only if someone was trying to attack/rape her or something.

Anyone have experience with these? Looks like if used properly would hurt like a sonbitch :D

UPDATE

My girl's pretty strong as normal, non-weight-lifting chicks go, but I see your points. A quick-draw weapon that is equally effective under any circumstance as long as you can get it out kinda thing might work better...

So what about stun guns? :D

I am thinking she would have to be quite strong to use it properly. If she doesn't put enough force into the swing then anyone attacking her could just grab it and then use it on her maybe.

Unless your girl is built I doubt that would have much effect on a attacker 9 of 10 times.

Stun gun or bear spray

Not a good idea, unless she is big, atheletic and very well trained to use it.

For most women a concealed carry handgun is a better idea, if its legal in your state

Your girl is going to wind up getting severely hurt if you get her an ASP.

For them to work properly, you have to have time to take it out, extend it, and wind up. Not to mention she better be able to put enough force behind it, or her assailant will be able to recover and things will go downhill quickly from there.

They work so well for police officers because they normally have time to extend them and have the force to basically immobolize somebody with a swing or two. On top of that, if hit in the correct spots (which police officers are NOT allowed to do), they can kill you or cripple you. A shot to the head is enough to cause brain damage if you get in a good one, and a good shot to a joint is enough to possibly permanently cripple someone in that limb. This is true even moreso with ordinary batons/nightsicks.

On top of that, in many states they are illegal to carry.

LOL, how big are those things when collapsed. And you could give someone a baseball bat, but unless they have the strength to use it, it can't do any damage. I personally think a baton is a little nuts if you ask me. Get her some pepper spray or a mini tazer.

I used to carry one in college, it was about seven inches long and would extend to about 14. It had a metal coil/spring with a steel metal ball on the end. So if you swung it at someone and they tried to block it, the coil would bend and the ball would still smash them in the face. They can be very effective in fights, although I don't know if a girl could really swing one with enough force to really hurt someone to bend the coil (depends on her strength).

When I was in the military we used collapsible batons for non-lethal/riot control training. They actually take a little bit of training to be able to wield effectively. And knowing the proper target areas on the body can increase the effectiveness. Personally, I'd go with pepper spray. You could get a can for the purse and a single shot can for the key ring.

Edit: a stun gun would require close proximity of the assailant to be used. Pepper spray will allow you some stand-off distance (maybe 3-5 feet).

Just tell her not to shoot it into the wind.

BAD IDEA.
Very similar to knives.
If you dont get a lot of training before hand they are actually more of a danger to the user.

Also probably illegal to carry around in your state.

The only people who carry batons around also have guns and pepper spray, and its for a very good reason. Batons fill a very small niche between the two but (as a general rule) really dont get used often.

I got just enough training in knives and batons to realize that I could never get enough training.

Mace or pepper spray gets my vote.

I'm not so worried about the guy being 3-5 feet away, she's smart enough to get the hell out of there and not just stand there like a sheep. What I'm concerned about is when he gets within striking range

The problem you run into with stun guns is that you have to already be within arms length to use them, and it may be difficult to access the most effective spot to hit somebody with one.

For example, if it's winter and somebody tries mugging you and they are wearing heavy clothing, such as a large bubble jacket or winter coat, you are going to be in a very bad spot.

Mace + stun gun FTW?

knives, pepper spray...

I don't like firearms, it's just too easy to kill someone accidentally, and how would you feel if that happened? Everyone have their own opinion on this of course.

My vote goes to quality self defense classes.

Assessing your environment for the sake of prevention and knowing basic escape moves go a very, very long way for preventing and minimizing most attacks.

For those that aren't preventable, non-lethal means probably aren't going to do much.

Forget about the stun gun if you have mace. Assuming she's relatively fast, she'll already be at a distance. That's an advantage right there. The mace has a higher chance of giving her a window of a few seconds even if it isn't a great spray.

A stun gun + mace would be effective in the situation that if it was windy out, she could choose not to use the mace and choose to use the stun gun.

A self defense class would be good, but as far as prevention and being aware, she is already VERY much so. This girl has quite the head on her, no dumb sheep waiting to be plucked here.

Hmmm maybe smoke bombs + flash grenades? The really powerful ones that can burn someone's retina out. *ninja*

I'm by no means a self defense expert, but I honestly think that an overwhelming majority of situations can be prevented by simple awareness and precaution.

If something does happen, then you most likely aren't expecting it and weapons like a baton or pepper spray aren't going to be effective. At this point the woman is going to most likely be physically overpowered by her attacker.

The options are either :

a) use lethal force if available/accessible (blades, firearms)
b) use every dirty trick in the book to break away from your attacker

Self Defense classes teach you ways to make your attacker *really* not want to continue.

I just don't have much faith in non-lethal products. I feel they are only useful in a very, very small percentage of situations.

She's joked about using bodily functions to dissuade an attacker :D

This is the girlfriend: I have no problem permanently damaging someone. perhaps it will cause them to think twice before they attack someone else with their dead leg. attackers deserve to be crippled. after all, then they get to "rape" the public welfare system for free. I only wish more women would fight back and leave THEIR mark. A life of a crippled rapist, or an innocent woman who suffers physically and emotionally. If it comes down to me being prosecuted for killing someone in self defense or contracting HIV or some other venereal disease, i'll choose prosecution.

If anyone has any suggestions on nice looking handbags that can fit a short barreled shot gun, let 'em rip. I got no problem blowin a hole through someone either. Or should I just go for the slung-over-the-shoulder look when I go shoppin at the mall?

As to hand guns, already looked into that... not allowed on campus property even with a license to carry. Stun guns/tasers are illegal in our state to begin with. Besides, as previously noted by someone else, by the time you can be accurate enough to fire it or touch them with it, their hands just might be on you as well... and guess what, you get hit with the shock too. Then it is down to a race of who can recover first.

As to mace/pepper spray... i don't know how many attackers and aggressive rapists you guys have met, but a lot of them are on drugs (marijuana, crack, METH, heroin, alcohol) and don't feel the pain. I've seen videos of people on meth being shot with police issue mace and it didn't phase them. The last thing I'm going to do is merely make an attacker even more angry... might as well roll over and take it by that point.
I've been told by a police detective - who was a traffic cop for some 15 years - that those little tiny bottles of mace dont' do crap. Just make them angry. And anyone on meth, heroin who gets angry... well, there's no stopping them. you guys might want to think about that before you send your pretty girlfriends out with a keychain decoration. (something I believe is worth serious thought)

even if they get a baton away from me after i've knocked them in the throat I'd at least have fought back, and not been one of the meek little chicken-sh1ts who become a statistic.
and i'd like to know which one of you thinks that a woman can't get training with one of these things? Just like i can get a handgun for a couple grand and take lessons at a shooting range (which i plan to do), i can find someone to train me with this thing. Get me a torso-bob from Dicks... nice practice. Heck, maybe Tim will let me practice on him.. Nothing like a collapsed trachea as foreplay!
