I only wish more women would fight back and leave THEIR mark. A life of a crippled rapist, or an innocent woman who suffers physically and emotionally. If it comes down to me being prosecuted for killing someone in self defense or contracting HIV or some other venereal disease, i'll choose prosecution.

If anyone has any suggestions on nice looking handbags that can fit a short barreled shot gun, let 'em rip. I got no problem blowin a hole through someone either. Or should I just go for the slung-over-the-shoulder look when I go shoppin at the mall?

As to hand guns, already looked into that... not allowed on campus property even with a license to carry. Stun guns/tasers are illegal in our state to begin with. Besides, as previously noted by someone else, by the time you can be accurate enough to fire it or touch them with it, their hands just might be on you as well... and guess what, you get hit with the shock too. Then it is down to a race of who can recover first.

As to mace/pepper spray... i don't know how many attackers and aggressive rapists you guys have met, but a lot of them are on drugs (marijuana, crack, METH, heroin, alcohol) and don't feel the pain. I've seen videos of people on meth being shot with police issue mace and it didn't phase them. The last thing I'm going to do is merely make an attacker even more angry... might as well roll over and take it by that point.
I've been told by a police detective - who was a traffic cop for some 15 years - that those little tiny bottles of mace dont' do crap. Just make them angry. And anyone on meth, heroin who gets angry... well, there's no stopping them. you guys might want to think about that before you send your pretty girlfriends out with a keychain decoration. (something I believe is worth serious thought)

even if they get a baton away from me after i've knocked them in the throat I'd at least have fought back, and not been one of the meek little chicken-sh1ts who become a statistic.
and i'd like to know which one of you thinks that a woman can't get training with one of these things? Just like i can get a handgun for a couple grand and take lessons at a shooting range (which i plan to do), i can find someone to train me with this thing. Get me a torso-bob from Dicks... nice practice. Heck, maybe Tim will let me practice on him.. Nothing like a collapsed trachea as foreplay!

Your a nasty one

If a woman is serious about self defense, she will learn proper ground fighting. A man is going to take a woman to the ground or attempt to restrain her rather than beat her up (tipically because he was to rape her). Judo/bjj is great for getting hands on experiance with a male in a safe enviroment who is trained to fight on the ground. If you can handle yourself with them, you can handle yourself with untrained attackers.

So learn judo/bjj, then add 'dirt' (eye gouges, etc.), and buy some pepper spray. If you have no grappling training, you might end up in a bad position to use your weapon and find it used against you. The sad fact is, if she wants to be able to defend herself against guys, she is going to need to spar some guys.

You'd be amazed at how much of a cockblock a screaming woman armed with a set of car keys fighting for her life can be.

If you aren't able to avoid a situation, it's most likely that the attacker already has the tactical and physical advantage. At that point it's doing anything and everything in your power to make his encounter with you as unpleasant as possible.

That's what *good* self defense classes teach. Dirty tactics that are easy to perform and that work.

I just think that the non lethal things lull you into false confidence.

Again, my opinion.

I agree 100%. Ask tim, i can wrestle. I got no problem doin the dirty thing. I think that learning self defense tricks to get out of restraint is very important.

I would prefer prevent hitting the ground in the first place. Staying out of the bad situation in the first place is key. But not everything can be avoided... so, next best thing, pull a Braveheart. Nothing like someone screaming bloody murder as they bludgeon your skull.

jujitsu is a great thing to know. It's based on not using your strength, but rather body weight/positioning to outdo and eventually either choke to death or maim your opponent. You would be at a supreme disadvantage in the striking (karate) martial arts because they are impractical (he's going to grab you, not box you), and because you would have less strength than a bum on meth.

Given about a year or two of taking jujitsu twice a week, you would have the necessary reflexes and skills for it to give you a big advantage over anyone trying to attack you.

oh someone beat me to it :\

Not sure what everyone has suggested so far, but I saw your edit about stun guns.

They make collapsible stun batons.

I think they are illegal, but I'm not sure. Wasn't snoop dog recently arrested at an airport with one, and it was considered a "deadly weapon"?

Pepper spray gets my vote too--small, legal, and effective.

You sound like an idiot. Unless you're 5'10+ 200+ lbs, you're not gonna be a match for most men.. even with a baton.

It seems like there's a lot of women now that assume they're just as strong as men. It's a load of crap.

If you were actually serious about getting self-defense advice, I really doubt you'd be talking it up like 'yo's some gansta-ass ho' from da hood wit mad skillz'

Considering that if a person is in a state of being where pepper spray/mace will not work, more than likely they'll also be in a condition where physical force is ineffective also. If you find yourself in that situation, you're fvcked anyway, so I don't see why you rule out mace/pepper spray just based on that criteria.

Also, as for it being illegal, like you said, you'd rather be judged by a jury then be in trouble. If that is the case, you might as well get police-spec'd mace/spray, which is much more effective. I've been hit with spray, tasers, stun guns, a cattle prod, and various other self defense weapons voluntarily, and the police issue spray was by far the most effective with a good shot for practical use (the cattle prod was extremely unpleasant, to say the least). The cattle prod was something else, but I'm not going to get into the effects of that considering it's just plain impractical. I couldn't even put my contacts in until more than a day later with the spray.

As for going for the throat with a baton, it's plain impractical. If it's a life or death situation, you go for the knees (immobilization), elbows (again, immobilze them, you can't do much assaulting or grabbing if your elbow is broken in three places), or skull (knock 'em out or death). Like I said before, a baton is impractical in defensive applications due to the situation you'll be placed in (close proximity, caught off guard, time required to use, etc). You'd be better off with normal blows to the genitals, throat, eyes, and stomping on the feet.

Some good advice in this thread. If you don't have the time/resources to take a self defense course, I'd recomend a book like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Dirty-Dozen-Techn...82865-7917517?ie=UTF8&n=283155&s=books

We have our own Dirty Dozen in the dojo meant for extremely close combat and striking/grappling (as soon as someone lays their hands on you, they are dismantled lethally). The only way you'll master them is through light practice with a partner, but the next best thing is reading. Get a punching bag and practice the basics for ladies such as eye-raking and poking, palm strikes (surprisingly powerful and fast), hitting/ripping the groin (ridge-hand strikes, thumb knuckle punches) etc. Practice these techniques once a week (on your b/f!) and you should have nothing to worry about as far as being raped.

If your assailant has a weapon like a gun or knife then you're pretty much fct anyway, but at least you'll have peace of mind for hand to hand.

Not getting raped > stupid fvcking campus no-carry-laws.

Do what you feel comfortable with though. As long as you follow the four basic rules of firearm safety, I would venture to say you are more likely to get into a car wreck than to have a nelgigent/accidental discharge.

Though it goes without saying that something is better than nothing. Keep safe.

Baton, Pepper spray, tazer, gun... all absolutely useless at helping a woman without proper training.

She'd probably end up taking the brunt of her own baton. It does require some technique and strength. I wouldn't trust my wife with one. Plus the time it takes to find it in a purse and deploy it. Way to long in a quick struggle.

Pepper spray, especily any thing advertised as "one shot" since you probably wont practice with a one shot can. Sure its incredibly easy to use pepper spray, but studies show that most of the time the victim rarely even gets to the pepper spray, let alone figures out how to deploy it under stress.

Same issues with a tazer, same issues with a gun, although both can be pulled and utilized much quicker then a baton.

But once again, without proper training, any weapon will only lead to more harm.

Ok, you might be able to learn to use a baton, but of all the baton training I've done, I've yet to see an impressive female.
