Personal Protection: Tomahawk

So, I was thinking of an alternative to a firearm, that can be quite effective if necessary.
I was intrigued by the fact that tomahawks are useful in close range scenarios to disable a foe. The can be thrown with training and are relatively small. I was thinking of getting two, I could store it under say, my mattress or under my car seat for protection and to cut the seat belt or bust out the window in an emergency situation. I checked NY laws, and I don't see any kind of specifics on possessing one of these.

I was looking at this:

Does anyone here own a tomahawk? Can you recommend me one if possible or should that suffice?

But when approached with impending zombie horde... bullets take up less space and thereby allow you to stockpile more. That and your arm wouldn't be as tired after, say... 3 zombies.

if youre looking for an emergency tool in your car to bust a window or cut a seat belt, get a serrated blade (to cut thru the seat belt easier) with a glass breaker on the other end. it is essentially a switchblade with a short, pointy end on it. it will break any window, even under water. as for home protection, tossing a tomahawk at someone that wakes you up is akin to trying to walk in space with snow shoes on. the amount of training you would need to be proficient in an awake state is high, how much more would you need to do the same in the first few moments after being woke up?

that said, i have my 20" hunting knife on my dresser next to my bed.

There is no alternative to a firearm.

As far as up close and personal defense goes, I think I'd rather take my chances defending myself with a sharp steak knife than a tomahawk. Any advantage it has is largely negated if you get knocked down or grappled. At least with a knife you don't need to swing it for it to be effective.

Better version. Scalps more injuns at once.

To be honest - at first this is what I thought the thread was going to be about. I wouldn't care much about the zombie horde with a couple of those around...

Yeah, me too. I thought his solution to small arms was going to be a cruise missile. The reality was disappointing to say the least.

Though I have to say, if you're big enough to throw a Tomahawk missile at someone, no one is going to fuck with you whether you're armed or not.

We used to have tomahawks as a kid as we lived near many Native American (we always called them "Indians", but I don't know what's PC anymore) reservations and some of my best friends were Native Americans. My best friend's name was "Little Thunder", and he had a tomahawk from his grandfather that had the feathers, etc. on it.

Anyway, my limited ability to use one effectively would render it useless in my house for self defense. Even if I was efficient with it, I'd think the chances of completely stopping an attacker would be very small. I'd need something with more stopping power. I would think an aluminum bat or even a regular knife would be just as effective.

OP, if you're gonna pack a tomahawk for personal protection, you'd better be about 6-2, 225+ and have "big guns" instead of looking like the typical anorexic geek with pencil arms...otherwise, you're just gonna get it shoved up your ass. Besides, for MOST situations, a Kabar is far better suited.

I've owned Kabar's since the Corps issued me my first one in 1970, and currently, I have one of these:

Made a great steak knife when we had our barge BBQ's...😀

I had that same knife before and I loved it. Unfortunately, the gf didn't really like having it around and I was curious as to how good of a knife it is, so I donated to a guy specializing in torture testing knives here at knifetests.com. My knife was used only once and is almost in mint condition aside from a few scratches on the black coating on the blade (from cutting a tin can).

I have a Cold Steel knife (Like a Ka BAR) and a combat shovel similr to what the Russian Spetsnaz use. While the shovel is a bit unwieldy it would definitely clean out your sinuses if you caught it blade side in the snot box. Shovel

Now if your going to get a hatchet you HAVE to be able to perform a backflip while throwing it or your just a pussy. CLick

Overall, it looks like that knife held up pretty well to the abuse he put it through.

Mostly, I used mine to hack through 2 and 3 inch nylon rope lines on barges...plus to cut steaks and such...😀

When I first got that knife, the alcoholic maggot who was my deck engineer was getting ready for heart surgery...
The project superintendant suggested to him that I could do it for him...and save the union lots of money. (this happened in front of our entire crew!)
I agreed and told him that I'd guarantee that I could have his heart out of his chest fast enough that he'd be able to see it beat once or twice before he collapsed...

He went on medical leave the next day...😀
