A good friend of mine says she has been asking her friends/family for a metal detector for her birthday for a few years (she has some sort of strange fantasy of combing the beaches in her bikini looking for lost trinkets), but they always laugh and say it's stupid. So I'm thinking of getting her one, but have no clue what's good/bad, how much to pay, etc.

Does anybody here have one? If so, what do I need to look for?

I had one when I was a kid I'd take to the beach with me.

Never found anything worth keeping really...

Radio Shack has them, so does Fry's if you have one around you.

It would be much more rewarding to just grab a shovel and start digging in random places for buried treasure. Metal detectors take the mystery and surprise out of it.

In either case, watch out for gas lines. They're not always marked that well.

Sorry KT have no experience with metal dectors.
I thought how this thread was starting it was kinda funny tho.

No Fry's in Canada. I guess I can check out RS, never thought of that, thanks.

Awesome, thanks! I've sent them an e-mail because it does not expressly state whether they ship outside the US or not.
