First off, Moderator, before you try to lock this thread, I am NOT advocating legalization! I am asking why Republicans are against it.

If Republicans want us to be in charge of our own destiny, why do they work so hard to retain the criminalization of both soft and hard drugs? I mean, if I want to smoke a fattie in my own home after work, and I am not harming anyone, why should that be a problem?

And don't tell me about all the crimes associated with drug use. We already have laws on the books covering crimes that might be committed to support a drug habit, so why do we need to criminalize the drugs as well? This is, I feel, something similar to the anti-vs-pro gun legislation..."we already have gun laws about the misuse of guns, so we do not need more laws," right?

If Republicans think that Government should get out of our lives...why do they insist on intruding here?

Russ: a fattie is a slang term for a marijuana.

You use the term "Republicans" many times in your post. The Democrats views on drugs are essentially the same. A better question would be why the two dominant parties are against it.

i agree that the decriminalization of marijuana is something whose time has come. as far as wheather republicans or demicrats want to do it....i dont think either will. really the US has put too much money into the war on drugs and wont stop in order to not look stupid. a resonalble comprimise would be to leglize marijuana for personal use and have it carry a 10% tax. that way upstanding pot heads like my self would no longer have to worry about going to jail for 10 years because a cop smelled marijuana on me searched me and found a seed. also the goverment get a nice chunk of money from the tax. this would also ease overcrowding in prisons as nearly 20% of prisoners are in there for maijuana related offences. so it's a win win win situation ....can anybody find fault in this?:)

EDIT: a fattie is a large marijuana joint, also known as "fattie fattie bom battie" or "bateh"

We all know why Democrats (some, not all) are against it...it is part of the Democratic ideal that they are watchdogs of the behaviour of all citizens. Again, using guns as an example, Dems (some, not all) feel it would be "better" if Americans did not own hand guns.

But Republicans are constantly talking about getting government out of people's lives...

well hopefuly when Bush is elected he will see that the goverment has too much of a say in what we do with our lives and decide that it's none of the goverments buissness what im smokin'. besides there can only be benifit from decriminalization.....trust me everybody would be happier if it were legal.

I'm Typing: 'some, not all' also applies to Republicans.

I think pot should be legalized outright. No worse than alcohol IHMO.

<< I think the vast majority of Americans are against it >>

says Ferocious...

A) Remember what Tommy Lee Jones said in MiB about the majority.

B) But if you ask them individually a lot of people support legalization/decriminilization...they think they're the only ones, so they are hush hush about it.

I for one think that weed, mdma, and lsd should be legalized. Weed being so prevalent, and pure mdma or lsd being rather harmless if taken responsibly. If legalized, there will be quality control over the latter and no PMA lookalike pills or oversaturated lsd papers...
