Personal aircraft questions

How much can I get a used single engine aircraft for?

How long does it take to get a license to fly it?

That is all.

My friend is taking flying lessons. He paid about $10,000 just for the lessons. It takes about 1-2 years to get your license if you go 1-2 times a week.

A Cessna 150/152 which is an extremely common 2 seat flight training aircraft can be found for as little as 10k or 12k in safe flyable condition. If you are willing to go up to 18k to 25k you can get a decent C172 (4 seat) or an excellent C150/152

Flight training will typically take you 45 to 50 flight hours at ~$70 to $90 per hour if you have to rent a plane. (this includes the instructor)

If you supply your own plane, expect to pay ~$25 to $35 per hour for the instructor.

There will be some ground instruction but how much depends highly on your ability to learn and how often you study at home.

Its extremely hard to make buying a signle engine plane profitable unless you do a time share type thing. It has been estimated that in order to make the costs of a plane worth while (instead of renting) you'd have to fly like 500 hours a year - which is alot..

I pay $140/hr for training here - including the instructor.

Sure...the airplanes are cheap, but good luck maintaining one. Fuel costs, inspections, AD compliances, storing, insuring etc etc. Dissasembling the airplane every year for the annual is a real hoot, not to mention paying the inspecting mechanic and fixing whats broken. $25,000 engine overhauls every 2000 hours. Then you still have things like landing fees.

Unless you're loaded, don't go it alone.

Oh, a private license is about $6000. You'll fly about 50 hrs.
