If that's how they set it up, they were irresponsible. The first time anyone is shooting a weapon like that there should be only a single round in the firearm.

A true "light load" will not cycle the action of most semi-automatic and full-automatic firearms. Both full- and semi-automatic firearms depend upon the recoil (either mechanical or the gas pressure) to operate the cycling mechanism. For this reason, there is a lower limit on how "light" a round can be and still reliably cycle the weapon. This is not like "Cowboy" shooting where the loadings are ridiculously light since the revolvers used there do not need energy from the cartridge to cycle.

There are numerous points of failure here:

1) Too many rounds in the magazine for an inexperienced shooter.
2) Disregard for the fact that it's not possible to use true light loads in automatic (either full or semi) weapons.
3) No baseline requirement for the people shooting the weapons (there is no way the operator should have allowed an 8 year old to fire the Uzi)

I am as vehemently pro-gun as a person can get, but even I do not support the abhorrent "safety" practices that were used in this situation.

There are many 8 year olds worldwide handing uzi's and beyond everyday for self-defense/military....like Somalia.

Most people here have never fired an uzi and think they are like these uber weapons that can propel you back and shoot a bad guy through the air.
 
I'm not pro-gun, but I'm anti banning-shit. Anyways, no way they should have let the kid shoot the Uzi for the recoil alone. That being said, no laws were broken and everyone has already been punished enough.

They most likely use an AK-47 variant in Somalia. The rifle has even more recoil, but is longer so it would be near impossible to shoot yourself in the face with it.

Correct. I know a Class 3 dealer that allows people to fire his for a fee plus the cost of the ammunition. He gets a lot of Japanese tourists as customers.

same. though i have no trouble with the knowlege that father is going to see that every time he sleeps and know that he helped kill his son.


i am all for teaching kids to shoot. the kid should have been fireing a .22 or such and not a automatic uzi.

Firearms outnumber swimming pools in the US by 30:1 (that is, there are 30 times as many guns as there are swimming pools). However, for children under 13, the ratio of pool deaths to gun deaths is 11:1. So, there are fewer pools, but more children die in pools than die from firearms.

Statistically the pools are more dangerous.

this the stupidest thing i have ever read on atot. You do realize there are 10's of millions of children that swim in pools while .000000001% of kids(rough estimate) fire uzi's.

This is my problem with guns, it seems the dumber you are the more guns you want. They should require an iq test before you can get anything more than a pistol/shotgun.
