Celebrate all you want. A crucial piece of Canadian economy is that the canadian dollar be cheaper than the US dollar. Now the U.S. is going to dump money elsewhere for those same imports and Canada will be fucked.

But manufacturing is not what it use to be. It's only like 15% of the economy nowadays compared to two and three times that level before. And shrinking everyday too. Which is why we also hear comments of do we really need policies that favour a lower dollar, to help out manufacturers, when 85% of the economy has nothing to do with manufacturing.

Having said all that, our Canadian manufacturers have weathered the storm quite well. Yes, jobs have been lost but people have found other jobs. And a lot of our manufacturers today are actually much more competitive and productive than they use to be. Very good thing. More innovative, upgrading their equipment and product lines and so on. The auto industry is a good example. Some of the most competitive and productive auto plants in North America are in Ontario. So are companies like Skyjack/Linamar which just build good products. Go figure.
