Just a correction after the Bank of Canada warned that the dollar is moving way too quick and may have to act. It's gained back much of the losses of this morning anyways.

Retailers and service providers will need to adjust their prices sooner or later, as people in Canada will simply start trying to buy with American dollars for places that have seperate prices for Americans and Canadians. For instance, I reserved a hotel room in Niagara Falls this weekend last month, and the price was about 20% cheaper if paying in US dollars. I wanted to see what would happen if we offered to pay in US dollars to get the 20% 'discount' rather then in Canadian. Sure enough, they've adjusted their prices now on the site so that 1$CAN =1$ US. Sucks for Americans.

BTW, found out from my dad that I still have a Canadian long-term savings account in my name, in Canadian dollars! I've had it since I was 10 I think (18 years) and haven't made any deposits or withdrawals. Suppose I started with $100 CDN in 1989--how much is it worth now in $US (with compounding interest?)

Your dollar becoming more valuable than the US dollar is going to crush your economy. It's a bad thing. You shouldn't be wishing it. 90% of Canadian export gets bought up from the US. If it's suddenly more expensive to buy it in Kanadia, the US is going to look elsewhere for it and the Canadian economy will crumble.

Crush? No, you'll still buy our Oil. Certain segments of the Economy will suffer for sure, but a US Recession will hurt the Canadian Economy much more than a high $CDN.

I'm married to a Canadian and generally when there are jokes about Monopoly money it is referring to the color of the money, not the exchange rate. Hell both countries would be better off if our money was like Monopoly money where $800.00 buys you the most valuable piece of real estate on the board.
