I'm not sure how to make it possible so my other networked computers can access my shared folders.. I know I can add 'everyone' and it will work, but I want to restrict it to just one of my other computers.

I have winxp.

I'm trying to add my administrator account on my dell computer.

EDIT;

I'm adding everything here that was asked, so it's more detailed..

I have WINXP MCE on this computer.. (where the folders/files are shared.)

I'm trying to connect to the shared files on this computer through a networked computer running win2000 or winxp home

it says here: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/08clientconnect.htm

that it should prompt me for a username/pass ..but it doesn't.. whenever I click the workgroup->computer->shared folder ..it just says I don't have permission to access it.

I tried accessing it on both a win2000 and a winxp home pc.. both are connected to the same workgroup.. and worked before I disabled 'simple file sharing' and added the permissions.

I only have windows firewall and I've turned it off to test. when I add "EVERYONE" to permissions I can access the shared folder from the networked computers.. but I don't want to give access to ALL the computers on my network.

Specific assistance requires specific information. There are many flavors of XP. Home and Pro handle networking very differently. Well, if installed on NTFS permissions and simple file sharing is disabled on the Pro machines. A google search "xp home (or pro if that is what your using) file sharing tutorial" will provide more hits with screen captures and detailed instructions than you can ever use.

www.practicallynetworked.com is typically what I recommend to novice users.

I am trying to figure out who or want your trying to allow to share your files with. Is it a certain person or a certain computer? If its for a certain person just create an account on the pc where the files are that is identical with the account being used on the other computer. Example create and account called billy with a password and add that to the files or folder on the pc hosting the files. Create the same account on the other pc that will be accessing the files.
The person who wants to access the files will have to use that account or enter the account name and password in when accessing the share. If you want to control access by computer then you'll need a third party firewall like Zone Alarm on the hosting machine and you'll be able to block by ip address because your in a workgroup. XP home only allows simple sharing and not specific NTFS sharing like the example I gave you. That can only be done with XP Pro, which would have to be on the machine that will be hosting the files. It is really not that difficult.

Is the pc hositng the files XP home or XP pro? Do you have a firewall on, even windows firewall? You do you have file and printer sharing enabled on your network connection right? It sounds like a firewall is running.

..yes I have windows firewall on, that's all.. but I've disabled it and tried connecting and it still doesn't work. plus when I add "EVERYONE" to permissions I can access it from the networked computers.. but I don't want to give access to ALL the computers on my network.

yes, I have file & printing sharing enabled.

Under the network connections go to "Local Area Connection" and open it... check and see if you have the "Cleint For Microsoft Networks" added into the list. You should run through the network setup wizard on the XP machine once. Pick a name for your workgroup , and enable file sharing....done.
on the Millenium machine , go to the Network setup wizard and run through it. I can't remember but I think Millenium edition secured it's network priveledges by using your logon password as your Network login if you are using a windows network. You may also have to manually go in and browse for the locations of the folders or drives on the network that you wish to share.
Just make sure both machines have the "Client" installed , and then sit down and turn on both machines and run the "create a small home network wizard" on each machine. It shouldn't be to hard.

I've already done that.

like I said.. when I add 'EVERYONE' to permissions.. it works.

but I only want select users to be able to connect.

Try this: as others have mentioned, make sure you have the same username and password setup on whichever PC's you want to share from (MSE PC?).

On the XP Pro MCE machine, go to Administrative Tools -> Local Security Settings -> Local Policies. Under Local Policies, click or expand Security Options. You will see a long list of policies but the one you are looking for is called "Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts". By default it probably is set to Guest only - blah blah blah. Double click that policy and you will be given a drop-down and you want to change "Guest only" to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves". Apply/OK that and see if you don't get the login prompt...you should. Which at this point you should use the above user to access the share.
