and they gave me this permanent retainer that I have been wearing for the past 4 months. But every day around 7pm my teeth start to feel kind of sore. Not in a painful way but in an uneasy want to rip my teeth out kinda way so I rub them with my tongue and bite down. This lasts about an hour and then goes away. Are my roots still adjusting themselves??? Anyways, the permanent retainer works well as my teeth haven't shifted for the past 4 months and are as they were when my braces got taken off, near perfect. Anyone have a permanent retainer?? Does it last a long time?? I also got an invisalign retainer as backup but I don't want to use it because it fits funny kind of like it was warped during processing.

What have you been sucking on that your teeth got so crooked?

BTW, if you are a former male model, how does that work with braces?

Uhmm, this is bad, go talk to your orthodontist. I have two permanent retainers (top and bottom) but I've had them for so long I don't really remember what it was like when they were new. But, I do know that teeth are a pain in the butt to fix if it's not done right the first time, and that wonky retainer is not a good sign.

Yes, I would have to say that permanently is a long time. ;)

Definitely make sure you do something. I stopped wearing my retainer and my teeth are becoming crooked again!

Well I would too but fact is that they are glued on the inside of your teeth much like braces and the glue can only last so long before it starts to lose adhesion and becomes brittle.

well i have the permanent retainer wired always. I was just saying that my teeth feel sore. I have no need for my backup and it is in fact not recommended to wear if you have the permanent retainer on because the fitted retainer could damage it.

I had a million questions and they find ways of brushing me off saying that this is like this, that, the other.

FYI... I wore a retainer for 5 years. When I stopped using it my teeth went right back to square one. Thankfully it was my bottom teeth so you can't tell... But if they tell you the retainer is permenant... it is.

that tells me nothing. i'd like to know what bs they made up. likely they were answering your questions and
a. you were just talking and not listening
or
b. they need to put it in more simple terms so you can understand.

hardyfvckinghar. If anything it's the 'simple' terms that pisses me off. When I want to know the process of filing teeth, retaining and otherwise as well as the course of my treatment, they do not want to discuss it. They have a CG program that calculates a formula for tooth mass based on variables that they never want to discuss. They have a 'plan' for each patient and the interns are the ones working on my teeth. The ortho is too busy. I asked them questions about raising or pulling down teeth to level gum tissue and that is one thing even they did not know answers too! In the end they are perfect and I hope I never have to see them again. I can only hope my permanent retainer lasts for a decade. That's why I ask.

If the permanent retainer lasts anything as long as the braces themselves, then I gauge the adhesiveness will last no longer than 1-2 years. After that I don't know what to do. I don't want to wear the invisalign retainer. The thing doesn't even stay in, it pops out on it's own.

I don't think the permanent retainer is supposed to be helpful on its own. When I got my braces off I was told to wear the actual retainer (not the permanent one) every night. I don't see how just the permanent retainer would help right after you got your braces off.

a permanent retainer is a glued down wire on the inside. It's like braces all over again, your teeth don't move. In fact they said 'don't wear your retainer' because you could break off the permanent one by rubbing it with the removable one.

BTW it goes on the bottom 6 teeth and the top 4 teeth. They don't move because they are held in by using each other as support so they don't shift. If they shifted it would be slightly as 'one' whole tooth.

So you expect them to give you a crash course in orthodontics? You seem smart enough, seek your own answers to some of those questions. The internet contains a wealth of knowledge.

Or else PM me your questions. I'll try to answer them since you hold the belief that your Orthodontist and Staff just bs you to try and get rid of you.

I don't think you have a "permanent retainer". Permanent retainers are cemented in place. You sound like you have a "removable retainer", and they *do* pop in and out. Just wear it as instructed and relax. If you feel like it isn't fitting properly then get an appt and have them adjust it for a better fit.

jesus. My retainer is a wire that's Glued onto the inside of my teeth!!! I mentioned that like 10 times in this thread. I was given a warped invisialign retainer that I have never worn. My wire is not removable. I was wondering how long the 'cement' would hold it's adhesion. It's more like plastic glue than cement.

Control your swearing.

Yeh, I was just reading this thread, usually I skip over your posts, so I must've did that and missed where you confirmed you had a cemented lingual retainer. (Lingual means "inside" or your "tongue side" - see there's a dental snippet for you.)
It threw me when you said it was popping out on its own. Cemented retainers should never do that.

It is cemented, not glued. If it is moving at all you should get back to your ortho's office and have them re-cement it. Period. You may have to do this a couple of times, but it shouldn't be frequent unless they aren't cementing it properly.

You're welcome.
