I've had this monitor for just about 2 years now. It's a traditional 19-inch CRT.
A few months ago, I began having some issues with my DSL at home, specifically, slow speeds, poor signal-to-noise ratios, and disconnects. The modem had been sitting on my desk, about a foot (maybe a bit less) from the monitor. This had been the setup for well over a year, but on a suggestion, I moved the modem a few feet further from the monitor, and the problems have not returned.
The last several weeks, I've also noticed a high pitched whine that periodically comes from the monitor. It's very faint, but either it's getting louder, or I'm just more attuned to it. It is clearly the monitor causing the whine, since turning it off instantly makes it stop. Switching to older drivers, and even the default WinXP driver (vid card is a Radeon 9550), has no impact either. I've even tried adjusting refresh rates and resolutions, but nothing seems to make a difference. Once turned off and back on, the whine is certainly less pronounced, but as the monitor is on for a period of time it returns.
Could this be the early death throes of my monitor? I've never had a monitor go bad so quickly, if that is in fact what is happening. Actually, I've only ever had one die on me period, and that was an old Gateway monitor that hung around for nearly 6 years before going kaput.
Any thoughts?
